Harry Allen (Gloucester, Ontario politician)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

J. Harry Allen[1] is a former city councillor and mayor of Gloucester, Ontario, Canada.[2][3]

A native of Ireland, Allen came to Canada in 1953 and moved to the Ottawa area in 1968. As a member of recreation committees for Gloucester township, he helped spur construction of the Earl Armstrong Arena and Sawmill Creek Pool and Community Centre. Allen also helped found the Pine View Municipal Golf Course. As mayor, he helped improve the road network and public transit service in the region.[4]

He served as a Gloucester councillor from 1978 to 1985 and then served as mayor from 1985 to 1991. Gloucester voters were angry after Allen introduced a large tax increase in 1989 to help bring municipal finances under control; he was defeated when he ran for reelection in 1991 by Claudette Cain, who subsequently introduced a tax freeze.[2][3]

The St. Joseph Boulevard bridge over Green's Creek was renamed the Harry Allen Bridge in 2012.[2]
