Harry Vilhelm Hedström (15 October 1901– 12 November 1979) wasa Swedish veterinarian and bacteorologist.
Hedström was born in Halmstad, Sweden, to Carl and Anna Hedström.[1] His primary background was in veterinary medicine, though he conducted research in several fields.[2][3][4]
Veterinary Work
In 1927, Hedström completed his veterinary examination, the same year he was wed. He worked as a professor of bacteriology and epizootiology at the Royal Veterinary College of Sweden (a predecessor of the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences).[1]
In 1943, on behalf of the National Swedish Board of Health, Hedström conducted a study on the then current outbreak of classical swine fever, which has later been desribed as an "exceptionally ambitious epidemiological investigation".[5]
Chemistry
In chemistry, Hedström is well known for his collaborative work alongside Swedish chemists Nils Löfgren and Björn Lüning. Together in 1953, they successfully isolated nebularine, a purine nucleoside antibiotic, from the Clitocybe nebularis fungus. Their findings were published in the 1954 edition of the Acta Chemica Scandinavica.[6] While Nils Löfgren led the extraction of nebularine, Hedström was responsible for discovering its antibiotic properties.
