Harry Thompson (also known as Harry Hay) was a fictional character from the British Channel 4 soap opera Hollyoaks. He was the son of Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard) and Tessie Thompson (Sian Gibson). He was originally played by Daniel Seymour as guest roles from 2007 to 2009. He then appeared in the second series of Hollyoaks Later in 2009, but played by Harrison George Rhodes, and once again in the sixth series of Hollyoaks Later in 2013, but was recast to Parry Glasspool.[1] On 10 February 2015, he returned as a regular role once again played by Glasspool.[2][3] He was killed-off on 23 July 2019.[4][5]

His storylines included his effort to build relationship with his once estranged father Tony, his struggle with sexuality, his relationship with Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson), their homelessness, helping Ste overcome his drug addiction, helping Ste with his children custody battle, their involvements in Amy Barnes (Ashley Slanina-Davies) 's murder, his marriage to Ste, his relationship with James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan), and his baby drama.

Character creation and casting[edit]

The character of Harry Thomspon was introduced by Bryan Kirkwood in 2007. He was the son of Tony Hutchinson (Nick Pickard) and his old flame Tessie Thompson (Sian Gibson), who Tessie kept secret from Tony for eight years. He was originally played by Daniel Seymour and appeared in guest roles in October 2007, March 2008 and finally in March 2009. He went onto appear in the second series of Hollyoaks Later, for Tony's wedding to Cindy Cunningham (Stephanie Waring), but played by Harrison George Rhodes, and once again in the sixth series of Hollyoaks Later, to visit Tony and then go on a holiday with him to Spain, but was recast to Parry Glasspool.[1] This was Glasspool's first role which he won straight from drama school.[6] Within a week of graduating from college, he was filming for this series. After his performance received positive responses from audiences and critics, he was invited to participate in the main series of Hollyoaks and play Harry as a regular role.[2] He later moved to Liverpool. In November 2014, it was announced that Harry would be returning in early 2015, played by Glasspool, with his first episode being broadcast 9 February 2015 on E4 and a day later on Channel 4.[3] Glasspool had noted that being called Parry and playing a character called Harry could be confusing, and that one person called him Parry on set and it was aired.[6] Glasspool was well-known for his numerous shirtless scenes in Hollyoaks.[6][7][8] For his role as Harry, Glasspool was nominated for a National Television Award for "Best Newcomer".[6][9] In August 2016, Glasspool was suspended from the show for 2 weeks.[10] On 16 October 2018, Parry left the show temporarily but returned early 2019. In March 2019, Glasspool was informed by producer Bryan Kirkwood that Harry had been axed from the show. He was killed-off on 23 July 2019, however he appeared as a ghost on 29 August 2019.[4][5]

Development[edit]

Characterisation[edit]

In Hollyoaks Later in 2013, Harry was portrayed as straight. When Harry returned in February 2015, he was a 17-year-old sixth former. He was handsome, intelligent, funny, and he was a footballer. He was that kind of popular lad every boy wanted to be and every girl wanted to be with, but secretly he was struggling with his sexuality.[2][11][12][13][14] He later accepted his sexuality and deeply fell in love with Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson). They committed to each other. He was an innocent teenager, but after Amy's murder, he somehow changed. Feeling guilty for Amy's death, he started to embrace some dark side of his nature. Feeling Ste was still in love with that 17-year-old, innocent Harry, not the real Harry, he started to doubt their relationship and develop feelings for James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan), because he felt that James saw the real Harry while he saw the real James. He was torn between Ste and James.[15]

Before 2015[edit]

From 2007 to 2013, Harry's storylines focused on his relationship with his father Tony. Tony was absent from his life in his first eight years because he didn't know his existence. In the sixth series of Hollyoaks Later in 2013, they bonded in their adventures in Spain and Morocco.[2]

Struggling with sexuality[edit]

In February 2015, Harry returned to the show. He was struggling with his sexuality.[14] He and John Paul McQueen (James Sutton) shared a kiss in a nightclub before he realized that John Paul was his teacher and married to Tony's best mate Ste Hay (Kieron Richardson). He had an on-off relationship with Cleo McQueen (Nadine Rose Mulkerrin) for several months. Harry ran into Ste outside a gay bar while school bullies Aiden Bigsby (Joseph Cocklin) and Kyle Bigsby (Mitchell Hunt) passed by. They attacked Ste and let Harry take the blame. Fearing people find out his sexuality, Harry covered for them. His name was cleared later. He and Ste bonded and started to develop feelings for each other.[16] After breaking up with Cleo, he started to chase after Ste, although he was still not ready to come out.

Relationship with Ste[edit]

Although their feelings were mutual, Ste tried to resist the temptation at first, because he was much older than Harry, Harry was the son of his best mate Tony, and at that time he committed to Sinead O'Connor (Stephanie Davis) after they had a baby together. Further more, because of his train wreck tracking record, his drug addiction, his criminal records, and his HIV, he was afraid of ruining Harry's life. But, at last Ste gave in to his feelings and they started a relationship. They committed to each other despite strong disapproval of Tony. The couple was referred to by the portmanteau "Starry" by fans. Resenting Ste for dating Harry, Tony forced him to sign over his rights as a partner of their restaurant The Hutch. Not long after he lost his job, he was also thrown out of his sister Leela Lomax (Kirsty-Leigh Porter) 's house after being framed by Cameron Campbell (Cameron Moore) for taking drugs. They became homeless, but Harry still stood by Ste.[17][18] Trying to help Ste, Harry took the indecent proposal of James Nightingale (Gregory Finnegan) and slept with him for money.[19][20][21] After finding out being cheated on and lied to, Ste broke up with Harry. Believing that it was his fault to put Harry in this situation, he refused to take Harry back when Harry begged. Devastated after breaking up with Harry, Ste got addicted to crystal meth after being seduced by Cameron. Ste and Harry later reconciled, and Tony finally approved their relationship, but Harry found out Ste was using drugs again. Harry, with the help of Tony, tried to help Ste overcome his addiction. In Episode 4429, Hollyoaks' first three hander, it showed how Harry and Tony tried to help Ste.[22][23][24][25] Ste punched Harry when he was struggling with the addiction. Harry learnt from Tony about Ste's abusive past. However, after clearing his head, Harry decided to stick with Ste.[26][27] Later, they sent Ste to rehab for professional treatment. After Ste was released from the rehab, he found out that Amy Barnes (Ashley Slanina-Davies), the mother of his kids, had a fiancé Ryan Knight (Duncan James). Ste didn't get along with Ryan. After some conflicts, Amy and Ryan asked full custody of the kids. Harry supported Ste in the custody battle.

Amy's murder and aftermath[edit]

Amy Barnes (Ashley Slanina-Davies) was murdered the night of her wedding. It was later revealed that his newlywed husband Ryan Knight (Duncan James) was the real killer. He killed her because she found out that he was gay. However, before that Harry tried to stop her from taking the kids away. They argued, Harry accidentally shoved her and caused her hitting her head. Harry left in panic, thinking she would be ok. When he heard about her death, he believed that he killed her. However, Ste was the major suspect from the beginning, because he had motive to stop Amy from taking the kids away, he had argued with her, and he had memory blackouts afterwards.[28] Harry knew Ste was innocent, but he wanted both of them off the hook. He enlisted James as Ste's lawyer, unaware that James and Ryan were working together to frame Ste. Harry convinced Ste to plead not guilty. When Ste found out James was actually working against him, he confronted James, but James told him Harry was the real killer. Ste decided to step up and take the blame to protect Harry. When Harry learnt that Ste was willing to spend his life in prison for him, he couldn't let that happen, and decided to confess. Having feelings for Harry, James promised him to exonerate Ste without his confession by casting doubt to DS Gavin Armstrong (Andrew Hayden-Smith), a stalker who attacked women but avoided prison. Ste was found innocent in the trial, but he was shot by Amy's mother Kathy Barnes (Sarah Jane Buckley) right after the verdict. Ste didn't blame Harry for leaving him in prison for months, he didn't blame him for getting him almost killed either, but when he saw his kids, he realized that he couldn't have Harry around the kids while knowing he killed their mother, so he broke up with Harry. When Tony found out that Harry killed Amy, he couldn't cope with it and threw Harry out of the house. Feeling guilty for Amy's death, Harry started to work as a rent boy to punish himself. To keep him safe and keep him close, James offered Harry to stay with him, and James would find clients for him, which Harry accepted. Sami Maalik (Rishi Nair) reported Harry to the police after he heard Harry and James argue and learnt that Harry killed Amy. James, Ste and Tony worked together to help Harry escape. When Harry was in the boot of Tony's car, the car was involved in an accident and Diane O'Connor (Alex Fletcher) was severely injured. Feeling guilty because too many people were hurt by his action, Harry decided to take the responsibility and face the justice, so he confessed to the police and was put into prison. Ryan was finally exposed as the real killer and Harry was released. Harry and Ste resumed their relationship. Harry proposed to Ste and Ste accepted. However, Harry started to doubt their relationship, because he felt that Ste still saw him as that 17-year-old, innocent Harry, but he had changed and he was not innocent anymore. What happened to Amy had great impact on him. He began to embrace dark side of his personality. He felt that James saw the real Harry, and he saw the real James, and they could be open with each other, so they became close. Finally, they had an affair. On their wedding day, Ste found out about the affair, he lashed out at Harry.[29] There was a storm right after their wedding. When Ste, Harry and Tegan Lomax (Jessica Ellis) were outside, a tree fell toward him, Ste instinctively pushed Harry away, the tree hit Tegan, and she was fatally injured. While his sister was dying, Ste begged Harry to stay to support him but Harry told Ste that he was not the man for Ste anymore. Ste then asked him to leave. Harry went to see James, but James threw him out, because he thought Harry came only because Ste found out their affair. Harry then left the village.

Relationship with James, death[edit]

Harry had a brief on-off relationship with James before his death. It turned out that they didn't know each other as Harry thought, and they were not open with each other. James thought Harry capable of hit and run, while Harry definitely didn't know James capable of drugging him twice, having him miss the court hearing so that he could get arrested, just to punish him for his kiss with his husband. In 2019, Harry returned after New Year. He tried to get back to James, but James rejected him at first, because James thought Harry would always put his family and friends before James. Harry convinced James to give their relationship a try. James agreed but changed his mind one day later, because he thought he needed to put his newly found son Romeo Nightingale (Owen Warner) first. Romeo convinced James that he could have both, so James and Harry started a relationship. Their relationship went well for a couple of months, but it deteriorated soon. James represented Laurie Shelby (Kyle Pryor), the rapist of Harry's stepsister Sinead O'Connor (Stephanie Davis), helped him walk away from the charges, and kept it a secret from Harry. When Harry confronted him, James claimed that he put his career above anything. Before he returned to Hollyoaks, Harry had one night stand with an old flame Sadie Cressington (Alexa Lee) and caused her pregnancy. Fearing to lose James. Harry kept it a secret. One night when Harry met with Sadie, his car was stolen and involved in a hit and run. When James found out that Harry would be a father, he gave Harry an ultimate, either James or the baby. Harry chose James, but he needed Sadie as his alibi, so he lied to her saying he chose the baby. Furious about Harry's lie, Sadie took the bribe from Liam Donovan (Jude Monk McGowan), the real culprit, and left. Without an alibi, Harry was the major suspect. To make things worse, James didn't believe his innocence. Meanwhile, Harry reconnected with Ste. Ste forgave his betrayal and they had a good time because Ste believed in his innocence.[30][31] When James found out, he was paranoid with the idea that Harry cheated on him with his husband. He accidentally punched Harry in wrath. Ste helped to find Sadie, but she refused to testify for Harry after being threatened by Liam. She later changed her mind and ask Harry to meet, but James believed that Harry was actually meeting Ste, so he drugged Harry and Harry missed the meeting. Sadie was furious, and once again refused to testify for Harry. Sadie gave birth to Harry's son Isaac. Holding his son, feeling the connections, Harry decided to take the responsibility as a father. James discouraged him by implying that he was not capable of being a father. When he run into Ste, Ste reminded him how amazing he was, and his son was lucky to have him fight his corner. Harry couldn't help kissing Ste.[32] When James found out, he drugged Harry again so that he missed his court hearing and could be arrested immediately. Without options, Harry decided to run away. When he kissed goodbye with Ste, he expressed his regret and confessed his love to Ste.[33] He was stabbed to death by serial killer Breda McQueen (Moya Brady), who was on a mission to kill bad father. She chose Harry because he would walk away from his newborn son.[5]

For his role as Harry Thompson, Glasspool was nominated for best newcomer at the 21st National Television Awards in 2016.[6][9] Ste and Harry won Digital Spy's Soap Award for Best Kiss in 2015 for their passionate kissing scene in a classroom.[34][35] They also won Digital Spy's Soap Award for Best Ship in 2016.[36][37]

Harry's tragic death wasn't received well by the fans. Many fans called to bring him back.[38][39]
