Harsha Saxena (formerly Harsha Mukherjee) is an Indian-born, international impact entrepreneur, educator, and advocate in the fields of sustainability, Environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, and Corporate social responsibility (CSR) compliance.[1] She is the Founder, Executive director and Chief Research and Marketing officer of the International Institute of Corporate Sustainability and Responsibility (IICSR Group)[2], a global education, research, and professional training organization involved in education and training related to advancing sustainability, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, with operations in the USA and India. [3]

She has developed an early MBA program in CSR at the MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU) in Pune.[4][5]

Her work has been focused on CSR policy and ESG compliance frameworks and on building standardized education and thought leadership in the sustainability and social sector.[3]

Career and entrepreneurship

She has a background in computer science, engineering, and management and has worked in the US and UAE.[citation needed]

In 2010, she founded Ekjaa, a social enterprise focused on connecting NGO's and social entrepreneurs.[6][7]

In 2012, she founded CSR Development Stories, a company specialising in CSR-related consultancy.[8][9]

In 2015, she established the organization IICSR to develop structured educational programs, research, and professional certification in CSR and sustainability practices.[10][5][11] In 2022, IICSR Group established their first physical campus in North Goa, India, but currently offers online courses only.[12]

In 2018, the National Summit on Mineral Exploration and Sustainability was organised with the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI) and IICSR[13], where she discussed sustainable mining practices and the importance of domestic sustainability frameworks in India.[14][15]

In the amendment to the Companies Act in 2014, which mandated CSR spending for large corporations, demand increased significantly for skilled professionals in the field, she developed a CSR ecosystem in India.[16][17]

She is the author of the book “Sustainable CSR (CSR Basics)” published by Himalaya Publishing House, an introductory book on CSR principles and practice.[18][19]

Academic partnerships

She has been associated with the development of CSR and ESG training programmes through IICSR. In 2017, IICSR collaborated with MIT World Peace University (MIT-WPU) in Pune to develop a postgraduate MBA programme in Corporate Social Responsibility.[20] This programme is an early structured academic offering in the CSR domain.[21][5]

Public engagement

She has organised and participated in public forums, discussion panels and sustainability summits[22] under IICSR on topics including Deliberations on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) in association with the Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry in July 2023.[23]

IICSR has also organised national-level forums on sustainability, including the National Summit on Extractive Industry and Sustainable Development in September 2017 in partnership with the Asian Institute of Management (AIM).[24]

She was associated with the International Responsible Investors Summit (IRIN) 2020, organised under the IICSR Group, where ESG regulation and foreign investment were discussed.[3][25]

Recognition

She has been awarded as a National Social Entrepreneurship Forum Fellow (NSEF–2011) and was listed among the Top Indian Women Entrepreneurs by the Dell Women Entrepreneur Network (DWEN–2012).[8] She was awarded the “Women Excellence in CSR Award 2014 by Lala Management Institute, Mumbai, and “Super Woman Achiever (2017)” by Femina. She was awarded Top 50 Rising Stars in India for 2016-2017, recognised by Barclays and We Are The City media. [8]
