Haruna Sentongo (born 30 November 1987), is a Ugandan businessman and the founder and chief executive officer of Haruna Enterprises, a real estate company based in Kampala, Uganda.[1] [2][3][4]

He is reported to be one of the richest people in Uganda with an estimated net worth of US$420 million (April 2021).[5][6][7]

Early Life

Haruna was born on 30 November 1987, in Kalungu, a town in Masaka greater district of central Uganda.

He is a son of hajji Haruna Segawa and Nakayija Jalia, who are part of a family with extensive property investments in Kampala. [8][1]

Education Career

Haruna attended primary school in Masaka, O-Level studies at Kabojja International School in Kampala and his A-Level studies at East High School, Ntinda. He attended Makerere University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree.[9]

Business career and the Founding of Haruna Enterprises Limited

In 2003, Haruna started as a small retailer dealing in ladies’ handbags which he imported from china with support from his father.[10][11][12]

In 2005, he started trading in home and office furniture from a distribution store in Kampala. With accumulated reasonable profits, he diversified into garments trading in 2007. He imported ladies’ clothes from Southeast Asia and distributed them in the great lakes region.[11] He then bought commercial plots in different suburbs of Kampala City.[13]

In 2011, he incorporated Haruna Enterprises Limited, a private company with limited liability, through which he constructed Haruna Towers with help from loan facilities from different Ugandan commercial banks.[13] With more capital inflows, he continued buying large chunks of land and developing more markets and shopping malls.[6][4][5][14]

Other business interests and investments

In addition to his real estate interests, Haruna owns and operates cinema halls including: a 7D, a 5D, and a 3D/2D theater[15], situated in Ntinda, a Kampala neighborhood.[16] He also owns a chain of fitness centers operating in different areas of Kampala.[1][3]

Manufacturing: Soft Beverages and Household Consumables

Haruna started manufacturing and processing bottled mineral water, skincare products, and a range of household consumables including hand sanitizers, laundry and toilet soap, candles, and confectionaries. His factories are located in Nsangi, Wakiso district of Central Uganda.[1]

The Uganda Daily attributes his wealth to financial discipline and proper usage and management of bank loans.[11]

Charity Work

In July 2020, Haruna exempted 500 tenants at his Segawa Market in Mengo, Kampala from paying rent for three months, citing hardships experienced during the Covid-19 lockdown.[17][18][19]

In October 2020, he also waived six months’ rent for all his tenants at Haruna Mall in Ntinda to help stabilize their businesses following the lockdown.[20][21][22][23]

Haruna plans to build a 213.4-meter/700-foot-tall, 40-floor, 5-star multi-business plaza at an estimated cost of US$250 million on Nakasero Hill in Kampala city in the next few years.[1]
