Harvey Updyke Jr
Harvey Almorn "Al from Dadeville" Updyke Jr. (born 1949) is the man charged with poisoning the famed live oaks at Toomer's Corner on the campus of Auburn University.[1] Harvey Updyke is a native of Alabama who made nationwide attention for poisoning the Tree's at Toomer's Corner.[2] Updyke has been referred to as an Alabama Crimson Tide superfan.[3]
Tree[edit]
The trees poisoned were 130 years old and were part of a major tradition for fans, students and alumni of Auburn University. (see Auburn University traditions).[4] Updyke was stated to have poisned the tree after the Auburn Tigers won the 2010 National Championships.[5] He called the Paul Finebaum Radio show to brag about what he had done.[6]
On January 27, 2011, a caller using the fictitious name "Al from Dadeville" called into The Paul Finebaum Radio Network a nationally sydicated sports talk show hosted by Paul Finebaum. He claimed to have poisoned the live oaks with the herbicide Tebuthiuron, commonly known as Spike 80DF and that the trees will die.[7] Based on soil testing done by Mississippi State University, the trees were poisoned with Tebuthiuron.[8] He was convicted and served 6 months in jail and ordered to pay 800,000 in restitution.[9] Updyke was banned from collegiate events.[10] Updyke was unable to make payments and was ordered to start or face contempt.[11] Following the poisoning, Updyke was attacked by a random person.[12] After Ole Miss beat Alabama a prank alert was made by the police.[6] Updyke stated that he would come dressed for Halloween as a dead tree.[3]
