The Hasbro Cinematic Universe (HCU) is an American media franchise and shared universe centered on a series of films based on characters from Hasbro intellectual property. The franchise also includes comic books and video games. Many of the actors, including Channing Tatum, Dwayne Johnson,[1], Jonathan Pryce, and Henry Golding signed contracts to star in numerous films. The first film in the HCU was G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009), and followed by G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013). The franchise will continue with scheduled release dates for Snake Eyes in 2020; and Micronauts in 2021.
Development[edit]
On December 15, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter reported that both Hasbro and Paramount Pictures are creating a cinematic universe combining the G.I. Joe series with films based on Micronauts, Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light, M.A.S.K. and Rom together.[2] In April 2016, The Hollywood Reporter stated that Michael Chabon, Brian K. Vaughan, Nicole Perlman, Lindsey Beer, Cheo Coker, John Francis Daley & Jonathan Goldstein, Joe Robert Cole, Jeff Pinkner, Nicole Riegel and Geneva Robertson-Dworet have joined the writers room, respectively.[3] On March 21, 2017, Hasbro Studios executive Simon Waters revealed that the G.I Joe films will be rebooted with a millennial approach.[4]

G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009)[edit]
Duke and Ripcord were by the Baroness, Duke’s ex-fiancée Ana Lewis, and rescued by Scarlett, Snake Eyes, Breaker, and Heavy Duty.
For the first film, in 1994, Larry Kasanoff and his production company, Threshold Entertainment, held the rights to do a live-action G.I. Joe film with Warner Bros. as the distributor. Instead they chose to concentrate their efforts on their Mortal Kombat films. As late as 1999, there had been rumors that a film from Threshold Entertainment was still a possibility, but that project never panned out. In 2003, Lorenzo di Bonaventura was interested in making a film about advanced military technology; Hasbro's Brian Goldner called him and suggested to base the film on the G.I. Joe toy line.[5] Goldner and Bonaventura worked together before, creating toy lines for films Bonaventura produced as CEO of Warner Bros. Goldner and Bonaventura spent three months working out a story, and chose Michael B. Gordon as screenwriter, because they liked his script for 300.[6] By February 2005, Paul Lovett and David Elliot, who wrote Bonaventura's Four Brothers, were rewriting Gordon's draft.[7] In August 2007, Paramount Pictures hired Stephen Sommers to direct the film.[8] Channing Tatum was casted as Conrad S. Hauser / Duke when the script was rewritten into a G.I. Joe origin story.[9] Marlon Wayans was casted as Wallace A. Weems / Ripcord due to his performance in Requiem for a Dream.[10] Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje was Hershel Dalton / Heavy Duty.[11] Dennis Quaid was General Clayton M. Abernathy / Hawk since Quaid's son convinced him to take on the part.[11] Rachel Nichols was Shana M. O'Hara / Scarlett and was the first choice for the role.[11] Ray Park as Snake Eyes[12] and Leo Howard was Young Snake Eyes. Joseph Gordon-Levitt was casted as Rex Lewis / Cobra Commander as extra incentive for Tatum to join the film. Christopher Eccleston was casted as Laird James McCullen XXIV / Destro,[11] after David Murray was forced to drop out due to visa issues.[13] Which lead to Murray playing an ancestor of James McCullen in a flashback scene.[14] Sienna Miller as Anastasia DeCobray / Baroness.[15] Arnold Vosloo was casted as Zartan.[16] Rise of Cobra was released in North America on August 7, 2009.[17]
G.I. Joe: Retaliation (2013)[edit]
After Zartan frames the Joes as traitors, the surviving Joes plan with the original G.I. Joe, General Joseph Colton, to overthrow the Cobra Commander and his allies.[18]
After the financially successful release of The Rise of Cobra, Rob Moore, the studio vice chairman of Paramount Pictures, stated in 2009 that a sequel would be developed. In January 2011, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick were hired to write the script for the sequel.[19] Sommers was originally going to return as director of the sequel, but Paramount Pictures announced in February 2011 that Jon Chu would direct the sequel.[20] In July 2011, the sequel's name was revealed to be G.I. Joe: Retaliation.[21] In June 2011, Dwayne Johnson was cast as Roadblock,[1] D. J. Cotrona and RZA were cast as Flint and Blind Master respectively,[22] while Élodie Yung was in talks for the role of Jinx.[23] In July 2011, Adrianne Palicki was confirmed for the lead female role of Lady Jaye,[24] and Ray Stevenson was confirmed to portray the villain Firefly.[25] Arnold Vosloo also confirmed that he would reprise his role of Zartan, but only appears in a couple of non-dialogue scenes, with Jonathan Pryce playing Zartan in most scenes.[26] Joseph Mazzello was confirmed to play Mouse.[27] In August 2011, Walton Goggins was added as Warden Nigel James,[28] and Bruce Willis was cast to star in the film as the original G.I. Joe, Joe Colton.[29] Principal photography began in August 2011 in Louisiana.[30] The battle on the Himalayas was shot in the south vertical assembly building at NASA's Michoud Assembly Facility, that had been fitted with a green screen wall at a very steep angle with a lot of rigging above to swing the stunt people through.[31] Previously slated for release on June 29, 2012,[32] Paramount announced in May 2012 that they were delaying the film's release until March 29, 2013 (but was later moved up to March 28, 2013), in order to convert the movie to 3D and boost interest in international markets,[33] and later avoided competing with Tatum's Magic Mike, also scheduled for June 29, Deadline reported.[34]

The origin of Snake Eyes.
It was announced in May 2018 that the next instalment of the G.I. Joe franchise would be a prequel, chronicling the origins of the character Snake Eyes.[37] Robert Schwentke was set as director that same month.[35] In August 2019, Henry Golding was cast to star in the title role, with Andrew Koji cast as Storm Shadow.[38][39] In September, Iko Uwais entered negotiations to join the film as Hard Master, and Úrsula Corberó was cast as Baroness.[40][41] Uwais was confirmed in October, with Samara Weaving casted as Scarlett, Haruka Abe, and Takehiro Hira added to the cast.[42][43] Steven Allerick was announced as part of the cast in December.[44] Filming began on October 15, 2019 in Vancouver and is expected to continue until December 9,[45] as well as Japan.[43] The film is set to be released on October 16, 2020.[46]
Micronauts (2021)[edit]
After Hasbro acquired the rights to the Micronauts toyline, it was announced in 2009 that Paramount Pictures in conjunction with J. J. Abrams was in negotiations to develop a movie version of the franchise.[47] In March 2013, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick mentioned they were working on a screenplay for the film.[48] On October 23, 2015, Tom Wheeler submitted a Micronauts draft.[49] On November 20, 2015, Paramount announced it was still planning a Micronauts movie without Abrams and Bad Robot.[50] On December 15, 2015, The Hollywood Reporter reported that both Hasbro and Paramount are creating a movie universe combining Micronauts with G.I. Joe, Visionaries: Knights of the Magical Light, M.A.S.K. and Rom.[51] In December 2017, The Hollywood Reporter reported that Paramount would release the film on October 16, 2020, but it was later pushed back to June 4, 2021.[46] On September 23, 2019, it was announced that Dean DeBlois will write and direct the film.[36]
Other projects in development[edit]
Paramount Pictures and Allspark Pictures have a variety of Hasbro films in varying stages of development:
- Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins sequel:
- Chuckles: In August 2019, Paramount and Hasbro announced that Josh Appelbaum and Andre Nemec are writing a G.I. Joe spinoff film about Philip Provost / Chuckles.[52]
- G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant: On April 1, 2013, reports surfaced that there will be a third G.I. Joe film and would be in 3D.[53] The studio announced that Jon M. Chu will return to direct the third film.[54] While at the 2013 San Diego Comic Con, Chu talked about bringing Scarlett back in the next film.[55] The writers of the second film are also thinking about bringing back the Baroness in the sequel.[56] Johnson is interested in returning as Roadblock for the sequel,[57] and Park has talked about a possible return as Snake-Eyes and also including his pet wolf Timber.[58] Bonaventura told Beijing News that he hoped that Johnson and Willis would return, the script is still in the writing stage, and that they are considering adding a third important role.[59] On September 10, 2013, Chu was confirmed to direct the film, along with writer Evan Daugherty to pen the film's script.[60] On December 5, 2013, Daugherty talked about writing the film's script and his feelings about Duke being killed,[61] but Chu told MTV that Tatum may return as Duke in the sequel.[62] On April 2, 2014, in an interview with Collider, Johnson believes that Chu may not return to direct, due to working on Jem and the Holograms, but they may find another director for the film.[63] It was revealed that the third film will have a 2016 release date.[64] On June 23, 2014, di Bonaventura told Collider in an interview that they're meeting with new directors and filming may start in early 2015.[65] On July 1, 2014, Variety reported that Jonathan Lemkin will write the script for the film and will focus on Roadblock with Johnson returning.[66] Martin Campbell was in talks to direct the film.[67] On January 12, 2015, D. J. Caruso was also in talks to direct.[68] Aaron Berg was hired on April 1, 2015 to write the script for the film.[69] In September 2016, Byung-hun Lee told LRM Online that the studio doing the third film is waiting on the actors to return, including Dwayne Johnson.[70] In May 2017, Dwayne Johnson stated that if the opportunity arises he would appear in any future G.I. Joe film, and that he hopes to be a part of the franchise expansion as well.[71]
- M.A.S.K.: Mobile Armored Strike Kommand: By December 2015, a film centered around M.A.S.K. was announced.[2] In April 2018, F. Gary Gray was hired as director and producer.[72] On February 28, 2020, Chris Bremmer was hired to write the script.[73]
- Rom the Space Knight: By December 2015, a film centered around Rom was announced.[2] In March 2018, Zak Penn was set to write the script.[74]
- Untitled Transformers/G.I. Joe crossover: In March 2013, during the release of G.I. Joe: Retaliation, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura announced that he is open to doing a G.I. Joe/Transformers crossover.[75] On July 26, 2013, G.I. Joe: Retaliation director Jon M. Chu stated that he is also interested in directing a crossover film.[76] di Bonaventura stated on June 23, 2014 that a crossover was not likely to happen,[77] however he later stated that a crossover was still a possibility.[78] On October 23, 2015, Jon M. Chu confirmed his intentions to make a crossover film between Transformers, G.I. Joe, and Jem.[79] In January 2017, Caruso stated to Collider that the script for the Transformers/G.I.
