Hassan Howeidi was a doctor in internal diseases and a Syrian Islamic preacher. He was born in Deir ez-Zor in Syria in 1925 and he was a member of the Guidance Office of the Muslim Brotherhood, formerly the Deputy General Guide abroad, and the former observer of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria.[1]

Biography

Hassan obtained his high school diploma, then joined the Faculty of Medicine at Damascus University, where he received his doctorate in medicine with a grade of “good” in 1952. His thesis was a doctorate on hyperthyroidism, and he obtained a certificate of specialization in internal diseases from the Faculty of Medicine at Damascus University.[2]

He grew up in an Islamic home, and his father was well-known in Deir ez-Zor, committed to religion and mosques, and had the greatest impact on Hassan's career. Hassan was passionate about science and studying since his childhood, so he took most of the legal sciences at an early age from the scholars of his country, most notably the distinguished scholar Hussein Ramadan Al-Khalidi, then continued his forensic education by reading and studying books in various fields.[2]

He joined the ranks of the Muslim Brotherhood since the beginning of his youth, and was a contemporary of the first generation, led by Mustafa al-Sibai. During his pursuit of his higher studies in Damascus, he was appointed as a member of the group’s executive office, and he affiliated with the group in 1943.[3][4]

After graduating, he returned to Deir ez-Zor and opened his own clinic to practice his medical specialization in internal diseases. He continued his Islamic advocacy work through his position in the Muslim Brotherhood in Deir ez-Zor and then in Damascus, and was subjected to many instances of harassment and arrest. He was appointed as a general observer of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria, after the group unified in 1980, and he was deputy to the general observer for several periods.

He participated in many scientific and jurisprudence conferences and Islamic advocacy seminars in Europe, North America along with Arab and Islamic countries. He was chosen as Deputy General Guide of the group during the eras of the previous guides: Muhammad Hamid Abu al-Nasr, Mustafa Mashour, Ma'mun al-Hudaybi, and Muhammad Mahdi Akef.
