Hassan Shire Sheikh is a Somali-Canadian pan-African human rights activist. He is the Executive Director of the East and Horn of Africa human rights activists Project also known as DefendDefenders).[1][2] He is also the chairperson of the Pan-African Human Rights Activists Network (PAHRD-Net) which is also known as AfricanDefenders.[3][4][5][6] AfricanDefenders is an umbrella organization created to coordinate and strengthen sub-regional efforts to overcome many of the challenges and gaps identified in protection mechanisms.[7][8][9]

Background and Education[edit]

Hassan Shire was born in Mogadishu Somalia and moved to Canada after being exiled by extremist organizations.[5][3]Hassan Shire graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in political science and government from Delhi University. He has a Master of Arts in Economics from J.M.I University, New Delhi.[10]

Personal Life and Career[edit]

While in Somalia, Shire founded and co-directed the Dr. Ismail Jumale Human Rights Centre (1996–2001).[11][12] Shire served as the Chairperson of the Peace and Human Rights Network (1998–2001) in Mogadishu, Somalia.[13][5][7][14]

He collaborated with Amnesty International Canada and the Centre for Refugee Studies at York University to establish the African Human Rights Activists Project while seeking asylum in Canada.[15][7] He later returned to Africa in 2005 and established DefendDefenders in Uganda. Shire also played a role in forming and establishing coalitions of human rights advocates in Burundi, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, South Sudan, and Somalia/Somaliland in the east and the Horn of Africa.[5][7][8]

He currently serves as vice chair of the Board of Directors of the Centre for Civil and Political Rights in Geneva, Switzerland. He also serves on the Board of the African Center for Justice and Peace Studies (Kampala, Uganda) and served as a board member at the Institute of Human Rights and Democracy in Africa located in Banjul, Gambia.[5][7][14]

Hassan Shire is the Executive Director of the East and Horn of Africa human rights activists Project Kampala, Uganda (alias DefendDefenders)[16][17][18] and also the chairperson of the Pan-African human rights activists Network (EHAHRDN) which is also known as AfricanDefenders.[4][15][6][19] Under his direction, DefendDefenders supports human rights activists with advocacy, capacity building, awareness raising, emergency protection, well-being support, and technology assistance.[2][20][21]

Hassan is a member of the Global Civil Society Movement.[3] [8] He is a member of the World Movement for Democracy Steering Committee.[17]

Awards and recognitions[edit]

Hassan Shire has won various honors from the international community which include; the Richard C. Holbrooke Leadership Award from Refugees International in 2017[22][17][14] and the human rights activist Award from the U.S. State Department in 2011.[23][13]
