Early life[edit]

Hasto Kristiyanto, was born in Yogyakarta on July 7, 1966, born to a father named Antonius Krido Pardjono and a mother named Yohana Sutami.

During school at Elementary School, Hasto was very interested in wayang stories, the Javanese cultural landscape was very influential in him. The story he likes the most is Mahabharata, a scene of the power conflict between truth and falsehood.

During high school at Kolese de Britto, Hasto started reading political books, in line with his activities in high school where he was involved in various organizations. He witnessed many cultural events in Yogyakarta, as well as the development of very violent political dynamics and this influenced him in developing his organizational skills.

In 1985, Hasto succeeded in becoming a student at Gadjah Mada University (UGM) in the Faculty of Chemical Engineering. During his studies at UGM, Hasto participated in many student organizations, his prominence in organizing was shown by Hasto being elected as Head of the UGM Faculty of Engineering Student Senate.

In 1986–1987 the rise of the PDI which gave rise to the name Megawati Sukarnoputri. The emergence of the PDI and bringing back public memory of the figure of Bung Karno (Sukarno's nickname), this awakening of public memory of Bung Karno made Hasto begin to think deeply about Indonesia's future.

During these college years, Hasto read a lot of books about Sukarno and his ideas about Greater Indonesia. It was this perspective of Sukarno's thinking that later influenced his way of doing politics and his political idealism.

For Hasto, Sukarnoist consciousness is a spiritual awareness that transcends the realm of words and the realm of reason. The Sukarnoist consciousness was the formation of Indonesian civilization through a long and winding road but with the goal of awakening the greatness of Indonesia Raya (Greater Indonesia) as a beacon of world civilization.
