Biography[edit]
Sri Sumarni was born in Karangsari Village, Brati District, Grobogan Regency on September 5, 1960. She is the fifth of the eight children of Sumardi and Ngasi. Her father died when Sumarni was aged seven, so her mother had to work by selling vegetables and rice in her village. She became a student at SDN Karangsari (Karangsari State Elementary School) from 1967 to 1973 and SMP Pemda Brati (Pemda Brati Junior High School) from 1974 to 1977. After she graduated from SMP, she was forced to get married, but she refused, because she wanted to continue her education. She then attended SMA Pembangunan Persiapan (Pembangunan Persiapan High School) from 1978 to 1981. After she finished high school, she studied at Muria Kudus University (UMK) from 2004 to 2008 and Slamet Riyadi University from 2009 to 2011.[2]
In 2003, she became a member of the Indonesian Democratic Party of Struggle (PDI-P). In 2004, she was elected to become a member of the Grobogan Regional People's Representative Council (DPRD Grobogan) for the period of 2004–2009. In 2009, she was elected again for the period of 2009-2014. She became the speaker of DPRD Grobogan for the period 2012–2014.[2]
She won the Grobogan regent election in 2015 with 73 percent of the vote, against Icek Baskoro, who got 27 percent.[3] She was inaugurated to become the Regent of Grobogan on March 21, 2016 by the Governor of Central Java, Ganjar Pranowo. Her running mate, Edy Maryono, was not inaugurated to become the vice regent because he died on March 11, 2016.[4] During her term as regent, she increased the status of Puskesmas Gubug I into a hospital. She also built a new hospital, RSUD Ki Ageng Selo, which started in 2018 and will be finished in 2020.[5] She was nominated for a second term as regent with Bambang Pujiyanto as the vice regent nominee with the support of every party in the DPRD, making her the only nominee for the 2020 regent election.[6]
