Hatch Kids
Hatch Kids[1] was a cloud streaming service for kids that ran from August 2019 to March 2021[2].
It was produced by Hatch Entertainment[3] first for Android[4] and then for iOs[5].
It was positioned as a safe on-demand gaming and edutainment streaming service for 2-8 year old children[6], without in-app purchases and advertisements. Its business model was based on monthly and annual subscriptions offered to the parents.
Hatch Kids was live in the following countries:
- Google Play & Galaxy Store: Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, the UK and Ireland[7]
- App Store: Finland
Games[edit]
Hatch Kids featured over 90 games from game developers such as Rovio, Toca Boca and Pepi Play. Most games were not exclusive to Hatch Kids, as they were also available as premium purchases from developers’ own accounts.
The games were categorised under Academy, Emotions, Creativity and Life skills, according to the developmental skills they supported.
Seasonal promotions included Halloween and Winter, highlighting games related to the season, such as Toca Boo for Halloween.
Hatch Kids revealed its most played games were Pepi Wonder World, Toca Life: Vacation, and Toca Life: School. During its lifetime, Hatch Kids users played for 873 893 hours (or 99.8 years)[8].
Technology[edit]
Hatch Kids was a technology pioneer using the on-demand cloud streaming for kids games from the beginning. It was approved by Apple's App Store as one of the first cloud gaming services on iOs. Bespoke build of Hatch Kids was also selected for the Samsung Kids Home experience[9]
Educational approach[edit]
Positioning of Hatch Kids was based on its pedagogical approach, inspired by Finnish early childhood education curriculum, promoting fun and playing as a tool for learning[10]. It was directed towards parents of 2-8 year old children, looking for fun but educational content for their kids to enjoy, especially during the 2020-21 pandemic lockdown time[11]. It promoted fun time together and family play time, and highlighted the soft skills that can be acquired through gaming, such as creativity and empathy.
During 2019-2021 Hatch Kids had partnered up with UNESCO[12][13], Save the Children, Mannerheimin Lastensuojeluliitto[14], Samsung.
