Hattons of London is a privately-owned specialist in rare and exclusive coins.[1] Alongside a range of heritage coins, the company distributes new-strike sovereigns for commemorative purposes – examples include the Queen’s Sapphire Jubilee or the 75th anniversary of D-Day.[2] The company is registered in Hatton Garden, London and has administrative headquarters in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, England.[2]
History
In 2017, Hattons of London was founded by Managing Director Simon Mellinger.[2] It also appointed its Honorary Chairman, the Rt. Hon Daniel Finch-Hatton, Earl of Winchilsea and Nottingham in this year.
As of 2019, the company employs over 44 people and the Sunday Times reported its forecast to generate over £27m in sales in 2019[2]. In just two years of business, it has outgrown three offices in the Staffordshire area.[3]
Hattons of London primarily focuses on a UK audience. In May 2019, it launched sales in the USA and the company is considering expansion in Canada and Australia.
Partnerships
Hattons of London has a partnership with SSAFA, the armed forces charity. It has raised £80,000 to date and has committed to a target of £200,000 by the end of 2020.[4]
Products
Hattons of London commissions and sells rare commemorative and heritage coins. Examples include the world first sovereign with a double portrait of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip, to celebrate the monarch’s platinum wedding anniversary.[5][6]
In 2018, the company released a Defence of The Skies range of seven 22-carat gold sovereigns to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the RAF.[6]
In 2019, it launched the first four-sided sovereign, which Managing Director Simon Mellinger says was “intended to celebrate British resilience in the face of adversity.”[7]
In its profile of Hattons of London, The Sunday Times mentions its launch of coins to mark the 75th anniversary of D-Day landings.[8] The coins were given sculpted edges to match the shape of the beaches in Normandy.
