Hawk Ravine is a former settlement in Butte County, California. It lay at an elevation of 1266 feet (386 m).[1] In 1864 a coal mine was established there by James I. Felter of Sacramento, California and for several years the mine provided coal to businesses in the city of Folsom, California.[2] An 1866 business report in The Marysville Appeal reported that the mine was financially profitable.[3] The mine was intermittently active into the 1890s; with difficulties of transporting the coal interrupting consistent activity of the mining business.[2]
It still appeared on maps as of 1897. As late as 1969 land sale advertisements were still using the name Hawk Ravine for properties at that location.[4]
