HaxBall is a 2D browser-based sports game developed by Mario "Basro" Carbajal.[1] Released in 2010, the game features physics-based gameplay in which players control circular characters to compete in football-style matches from a top-down perspective. The game blends elements of soccer and hockey and is known for its fast-paced multiplayer matches and extensive use of user-created rooms and custom maps.[2]
Gameplay
HaxBall is a real-time, top-down multiplayer sports game in which players control circular avatars to compete in goal-based matches on various arena fields. Each player moves their character using keyboard controls and strikes a ball that behaves according to a physics engine, creating fast-paced, interactive gameplay that has been compared to a blend of soccer and air hockey.[3][4]
Matches take place in rooms that players can create or join, where hosts can adjust settings such as stadium type, time limits, and score conditions before play begins. The game supports multiple players in a single match and can be played in different field configurations, including those created by the community.[5][6]
Development
HaxBall was developed by Mario Carbajal, known online as basro, with contributions from several collaborators.[7] The game is written in the Haxe programming language and relies on WebRTC to support real-time peer-to-peer multiplayer connections between participants. This networking approach allows matches to be hosted directly by players, though varying levels of browser support have affected compatibility on some platforms.[8] The game was initially released in December 2010 and originally ran using Adobe Flash Player, employing RTMFP for peer-to-peer communication. After Flash was phased out, HaxBall was reworked using HTML5.[9]
Reception
Critical coverage of HaxBall has been limited. The game was reviewed by Jeuxvideo.com, which awarded it a score of 14/20, praising its physics based mechanics and accessible multiplayer gameplay while noting its minimalist visuals and lack of extensive content outside online matches.[10]
