Haydée Balza (Tenerife, España, 17 de febrero de 1948) is a Spanish actress with an extensive career in Venezuelan television, film and theater industry. She's regarded as the major sex symbol in Venezuela during the golden years of cinema and television, in films like El Pez que Fuma and the play Oh! Calcutta!, in which she performed for four years.
Biography[edit]
In 1966 she initiated her career in the theater, with key roles in classic plays from Shakespeare and Federico García Lorca that toured not only Venezuela but the entire continent, such as Hamlet where she played Ophelia, The House of Bernarda Alba and Yerma; but she caught the attention of the critics and the public playing the lead in La Celestina, where she would appear completely naked on the stage. The first actress to ever do so in South America. She would find herself trapped in controversy in 1969 when the then president of Venezuela, Rafael Caldera, closed down the production of the avant-garde play The Beard due to a felatio performed on stage by her character.
In the early seventies she booked several international campaigns as a model, but thanks to her popularity gained on the theater, Venevisión signed her for a series of dramatic projects produced by Renny Ottolina, like the Spanish film: Fin de semana al desnudo alongside Alfredo Landa and Lina Morgan, and another four films directed by José María Forqué.
In Venevisión she was cast as the main villain opposed to stars of the time: Rebeca Gonzalez, Lupita Ferrer, Carmen Julia Álvarez and Ada Riera, becoming the most sensual figure of the Venezuelan television of the seventies and eighties, the golden age of telenovelas in Venezuela.
She retired in 2013 in the play Qué Hice?, after almost fifty years in the business.
