Hayyim Cohen (also spelled Hayim Cohen, or ื—ื™ื™ื ื™ื•ืกืฃ ื›ื”ืŸ) was a researcher and professor of Islamic Studies and Jewish History. He received is PhD in Islamic Studies from the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1962[1]. He went on to teach Islamic Studies, and the History of Middle Eastern Jewry at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem, New York University, Yeshivah University and Brooklyn College.[2] He authored many books including: The Jews of the Middle East, 1860-1972,[2] ื”ืคืขื™ืœื•ืช ื”ืฆื™ื•ื ื™ืช ื‘ืขื™ืจืืง[3] (The Zionistic Efforts in Iraq). He frequently spoke at the Residence of the Israeli President, regarding the contribution of Middle Eastern Jewry to the Zionist cause.[2]

Personal Experiences[edit]

Hayyim Cohen was born in 1930 in a small town outside of Bagdad, Iraq. His elementary school education was at a private Jewish school started by his grandfather, Nissim Cohen. While his secondary education was at a local Islamic School. When Hayyim was about 12-13 years old his family moved to India for 6 months to avoid religious persecution. After returning to Iraq, he eventually moved to Jerusalem in 1944, where he continued his education and pursued his PhD.[2]
