Headset is a business intelligence and data analytics firm serving the legal cannabis industry. Their software is used by dispensaries, cultivators, and processors to track and visualize sales data and other key information. The company has logged over 300,000 products and $4.5 billion in transactions, as of April 9, 2019.[1] They describe themselves as “customized business intelligence for the cannabis industry."[2] Headset is based in Seattle, Washington.

History[edit]

Headset was founded in 2015 by Leafly's three co-founders — Cy Scott, Brian Wansolich, and Scott Vickers — after Leafly was acquired by the private equity firm Privateer Holdings.[3][4] After working extensively with the legal and medical cannabis industries through Leafly, the founders identified data services for cannabis as an underdeveloped field, said Scott, their CEO, in a Geekwire profile of the company:

"We didn’t really understand consumer behavior and market trends,” Scott said of the marketplace at the time. Brands, he said, were "throwing everything at the wall and seeing what might stick."[5]

Funding[edit]

Headset was launched in 2015 with seed funding from Poseidon Asset Management. Headset raised $2.5 million in January 2017 from Salveo Capital and Hypur Ventures.[6] This was followed by $12.1 million in a Series A funding round led by Poseidon and AFI Capital Partners.[7]

Products[edit]

Headset generates revenue by selling monthly subscriptions to its software products, as well as by offering custom reporting services.

Retailer[edit]

Retailer provides dispensaries and legal cannabis stores with real-time dashboards displaying key sales metrics. It offers information on sales, inventory, and vendors, as well as detailed budtender performance metrics.[5][8] Headset also offers a retail benchmarks tool, allowing dispensaries to see their place in the market.[9]

Insights[edit]

Insights is targeted at cannabis growers and processors, allowing them to see industry-wide information on pricing and other market indicators.[5][10]

Bridge[edit]

Bridge is an inventory management software solution for the cannabis industry, similar to the vendor managed inventory systems used by companies like Walmart.[5][11]

Industry Reports[edit]

Headset publishes a series of free "Industry Reports" using the data they collect via their three software products.[12] These reports are generally based on a specific theme, like seasonal sales trends or the popularity of CBD, and put their sales data into context, via graphs and narrative analysis.[13]

Partnership with Nielsen[edit]

Headset recently announced a partnership with TV ratings and business analytics provider Nielsen, as well as the professional services firm Deloitte, on a series of reports documenting the U.S. and Canadian cannabis industries.[14] The first report looked at cannabis sales on 4/20 and was followed by reports covering the Canadian market and the link between pet ownership and CBD consumption.[15][16][17]
