Founded in 1877, Health Shield[1] is a UK-based not for profit organisation which provides healthcare and health cash plans[2] to private and public sector organisations and blue-chip companies.
Health Shield were established at a time when there was no such thing as the NHS[3] or welfare state in the UK, workers without the money to pay for their healthcare had to find a way to provide for themselves and their families in times of need and sickness.
Health cash plans, a form of health insurance, were created as a way for families to provide an allowance towards the cost of dental and optical treatment, physiotherapy, acupuncture, osteopathy, chiropractic treatment, specialist consultation.[citation needed]
