Health Systems Innovation Lab (HSIL) is a global research and training lab based at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health. It focuses on health system performance, health policy, and venture creation, and conducts its work across two interrelated streams—health systems and innovation—through a Harvard-based interdisciplinary team and an international collaborative network.

HSIL is internationally known for convening the world's largest health systems innovation event, the Annual Health Systems Innovation Hackathon,[1][2][3] which has generated a global venture pipeline dedicated to healthcare innovation and health system transformation, engaging more than 6,000 participants across 40 hubs in over 30 countries and incubating more than 100 ventures.

History and purpose

The lab was established under the leadership of Rifat Atun, Professor of Global Health Systems at Harvard University, Vice-Dean for Innovation and Non-Degree Education at the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health.[4] He has been listed by Clarivate as a Highly Cited Researcher.[5][6] HSIL undertakes research, education, innovation, and translation activities to engage innovators, researchers, practitioners, and collaborators from government, the private sector, multilateral entities, and civil society to support high-value health systems and accelerate the diffusion of healthcare innovations.[7][8][9] Since 2021, HSIL has expanded into a global network of academic, policy, and industry partners spanning more than 60 countries.

Research and initiatives

HSIL’s work spans research, education, and translation activities:

  • Research – assessing health system performance, informing the implementation of health system innovations, and evaluating their impact to support progress toward high-value health systems. Risk Factors (e.g., Hypertension, Hypercholsterolemia) Diseases (e.g., Cancer, Cardiovascular Disease), Treatment Modalities (e.g., Surigery, Radiotherapy), Governance and Organization (e.g., National Cancer Control Plans), Financing (e.g., Innovative Financing and Fiscal Space), and Resource Management (e.g., Artificial Intelligence, Infrastrucure), among others, have been used as 'tracers' to analyse and measure system performance using an HSIL health systems analysis proprietary framework.[10][11][12][13][14][15][16][17][18][19]
  • Education – training students, researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to design, implement, and scale innovations to improve health system performance.[20][21][22]
  • Translation – translating research findings into policy and practice through support for innovation ecosystems, venture incubation, and advisory work with public and private entities.[23][24][25]

Global collaboration and impact

HSIL researchers have produced more than 250 peer-reviewed publications, including work in The Lancet Oncology, The Lancet Global Health, BMJ Global Health, Nature Medicine, and The Lancet Digital Health.

HSIL coordinates a network of more than 40 hubs in over 30 countries, bringing together universities, ministries of health, civil-society organizations, and industry partners, including Microsoft, Novo Nordisk, Roche, Movement Health Foundation, and PATH.

HSIL convenes policy workshops and participates in international forums including the World Health Assembly, World Health Summit, World Economic Forum, the International Society for Pediatric and Adolescent Diabetes, and Lancet Commission meetings.[50]

More than 2,200 students and professionals have been trained through HSIL-affiliated courses and initiatives.

The lab has produced more than 25 policy reports and several global case studies to support reforms and venture-building activities in multiple countries.
