Healthy Kids Running Series is a North American non-profit running program.[edit]

Local Race Series ("Locations") operates under the umbrella organization, Pattison Sports Group. While operating as its own entity, Healthy Kids Running Series develops a national curricula for use in all Series, councils and provides support of individual location coordinators and institutes new Series in additional locations before the start of each fall and spring.

Mission[1][edit]

Healthy Kids Running Series (HKRS) is a non-profit 501c3 youth running program for children ages 2-middle school age that provides kids with a positive, educational, and fun experience in the world of running. The mission is to combat the increasing rates of childhood obesity in America with a running program that motivates kids to live a healthy and active lifestyle, while providing a fun environment to improve their self-esteem. HKRS encourages kids to adopt a "Get Up and Go!" attitude.[2]

Program[edit]

The Healthy Kids Running Series is a five-week running program in the spring and fall for kids from Pre-K to 8th grade. Each Race Series takes place once a week and offers age appropriate running events including the 50 yard dash, the 75 yard dash, the 1/4 mile run, the 1/2 mile run, and the one mile run. Kids compete each week of the Series for a chance to earn points and at the end of the Series the top boy and girl in their respective age division receive a trophy. It doesn't matter how fast or slow kids run because all of the participants receive a participant medal and gift bag for their achievements courtesy of sponsors. HKRS encourages kids to adopt a healthy and active lifestyle, help increase their self-esteem, and make new friends

History[edit]

Healthy Kids Running Series began as a community give back program started by Jeff Long for Pattison Sports Group in fall of 2009. Initially, HKRS began with one location (West Chester, PA) and one fall season. In fall of 2010 a second location (Concord Township, PA) was created to meet demand. Following 2010 a second season (spring) was added to keep kids moving and engaged. In the spring of 2011 two (2) more towns were added and since then the growth has been meteoric[3]. In the summer of 2013, Tamara Conan was hired as the full-time director to oversee the program and has since hired a full-time staff. HKRS has experienced double digit growth season over season.[1]
