Heather Marie Howitt (née McMillen) is the inventor of the tea product Oregon Chai.

Biography[edit]

Born in 1968 as Heather McMillen, Howitt studied anthropology at the University of California at Santa Cruz. During a leave of absence from school, she hiked in the Himalayas, where she first encountered chai. Upon her return to Santa Cruz, she was able to buy chai locally, but not when she moved back to Portland, Oregon following her graduation in 1992. She experimented with recipes and eventually decided to try selling her own ready-to-drink chai product.[1]

In April 1994, she founded the company Oregon Chai with her mother Tedde McMillen, also of Portland, Oregon.[2]

After Celestial Seasonings made an offer to buy the company in 2002, she lost her position as CEO (although she retained both ownership and a seat on the Oregon Chai board of directors).[1] In 2004, Howitt and McMillen sold the company to Kerry Group for over 75 million dollars.[1][2][3]
