Synopsis
Zhong Kui is a renowned ghost hunter in China, authorized by the king to address injustices in the world. This series is based on Zhong Kui, presenting captivating stories of ghosts, foxes, and monsters. The five units of the "Tian Shi Zhong Kui" Singapore edition are Yang Guifei, Sanhui Bao Qingtian, A Handful of Snow, Jiangshan Beauty, and June Snow.
Unit 1: Yang Guifei
The story details Zhong Kui's canonization as a general of Fu Mo after being wronged by Emperor Ming of Tang and assisting Concubine Yang's escape to Dongying for her later years. In this unit, Tian Niu portrays Yang Guifei.
Unit 2: Three Meetings of Bao Qingtian
A gentle and lovely woman, Liu Yeqin (Guo Shuxian), and her brother Xiangsailu's childhood sweetheart, loved each other. Tragically, Ye Qin was raped by her master (Weng Jiaming). Feeling disgraced, Ye Qin killed her master and then committed suicide. Upon learning the truth, Sailu was deeply distraught and attempted suicide, but was prevented by the spirits of Zhong Kui and Ye Qin. Zhong Kui sought to help Ye Qin regain her purity, but Ye Qin, feeling her body defiled, feared facing the world again and refused. Sailu, burdened by his unfulfilled desire for revenge, was consumed by despair. Ye Qin, witnessing Sailu's obsession, resolved to help him. Zhong Kui ordered Sailu to keep Ye Qin's body for seven or forty-nine days. Unknown to them, the true master, Ye Qin Wolong, was using this as a stalking tactic, ensnaring Ye Qin's soul. Fortunately, Zhong Kui eliminated him, and assisted Bao Zheng in discovering that the murderer of Wolong was his wife, Han Dieer (Hong Zhaorong). Ye Qin finally cleared her name and returned to the realm of the living.
Unit 3: A Handful of Snow
This unit is adapted from the legendary "A Handful of Snow" by Li Yu, a playwright of the late Ming and early Qing dynasties, and the traditional Peking Opera repertoire "Da Yan Song (alias Kaishan Mansion)". The Ming Dynasty Prime Minister Yan Song and his son framed and murdered the Taichang Temple Zhengqing Mo Huaigu family for an ancient jade cup "a handful of snow". Mo Huaigu's student, Tang Qin, proved ungrateful and persecuted him. The grieving daughter, Xueyan, killed Tang Qin to avenge her father. Following Tang Qin's death, he complained to Zhong Kui, leading Zhong Kui to expose their heinous crimes.
Unit 4: Jiangshan Beauty
This unit is adapted from the folk tale "You Long Xi Feng".
The Zhengde Emperor sought to wed the virtuous maiden Li Feng to the palace, but was thwarted by Empress Zheng, who orchestrated the death of academician He Huai, charged with the task. He Huai's vengeful spirit appealed to Zhong Kui, leading to a series of palace intrigues.
Unit 5: June Snow
This unit draws upon characters from Guan Hanqing's Yuan Dynasty masterpiece "The Immortal Dou E", adapting it for the series.
