Hedges Law Limited is an English law firm based in Oxfordshire, providing legal services in family, property, private client, dispute and business law. It is one of the oldest legal practices in Oxfordshire and is structured as an employee-owned business.
History
The firm traces its origins to 1789, when it was founded by John Kirby Hedges in Wallingford, Oxfordshire.[1] During the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the Hedges family were active in local banking and brewing, and the legal practice became a long-standing institution in the county.[1] Hedges Law was re-incorporated as a limited company in 2012.[2]
In 2021 the firm became employee-owned, transferring ownership to its staff, who are internally referred to as “Hedgeholders”.[3] Since adopting that model, the firm has reported business growth of around 27 per cent.[4]
In 2023 Hedges announced a new office in Summertown, Oxford, bringing together its property, family and private client teams.[5]
Structure and ownership
Hedges Law operates as a private limited company under employee ownership.[3] Its registered office is at 16 Market Place, Wallingford, Oxfordshire.[6] The firm states that the employee-ownership model is intended to promote engagement and long-term stability.[1]
Practice areas
Hedges Law provides legal advice and representation in:
- Family law – divorce, separation, mediation and child arrangements;[7]
- Wills, probate and inheritance – estate planning, executorship and inheritance disputes;[8]
- Property law – residential and commercial conveyancing, equity release and landlord-tenant matters;[9]
- Dispute resolution – property, construction and employment disputes;[10]
- Business and commercial law – business transactions, succession and restructuring.[11]
Reputation and recognition
The firm is listed in both the Legal 500 and Chambers & Partners directories.[12][13] Legal 500 notes the firm’s historic origins in 1789 and names Nicola Poole as Managing Director.[12] Chambers & Partners ranks Hedges Law for its family-law and residential-property practice and describes a client-centric approach.[13]
According to reports following the employee-ownership transition, Hedges recorded 27 per cent growth in turnover.[4] The firm also gained attention for appointing an all-female board of directors in 2024.[14]
Client-review platform ReviewSolicitors lists the practice with an average rating of 4.9 / 5 based on hundreds of reviews.[15]
Offices
The firm has offices in Wallingford and Oxford (Summertown), and serves clients across Oxfordshire, the Cotswolds and London.[5]
Community and activities
Hedges Law runs an annual essay competition for local school students, offering work-experience placements to winners.[16] It also selects a "charity of the year" voted for by staff, supporting causes such as Homeless Oxfordshire.[1]
