come on. The only question is: is this topic notable. Million of downloads, counted by independent entities indicate yes. Second, there is reception by independent, reliable, non-anoymous media outlets, FAZ, C't etc. I see no review about them or why this continued reception over years, many countries etc is not good enough to satisfy the requirements? There are reliable sources but more important notable significant real world reception usage and impact over the years.     Hedgewars is an open source turn-based strategy artillery video game.[6] Similar to Worms[7] and WarMUX, players control a team of hedgehogs across a deformable terrain, battling other computer- or player-controlled teams. Hedgewars is available on different platforms including Linux, Windows and Mac OS X.[8] It was also be ported for Android[5], iOS,[4] and many other mobile devices like the GP2X or OpenPandora.[9] Hedgewars is a very popular competitive multiplayer game; it was downloaded millions of times (see chapter usage below) and one of the top ten freeware apps on the Mac app store.[10][11][12]

    Development history[edit]

    In 2004 Hedgewars was started as free and open source video game clone of Worms World Party[7] with additional features by Russian developer Andrey "unC0Rr" Korotaev.[6][1] It was released to the public two years later with version 0.8.1[1] under the Modified BSD license.[13]

    The core game logic is written in FreePascal, the GUI elements of it in C++ and the optional network-play game server in Haskell. The game utilizes FOSS cross-platform software libraries like SDL, OpenGL, Qt, and Lua,[14] and is therefore available for a broad range of operating systems[8] and hardware computing platforms, from x86 PC to ARM based mobile devices.[5][4][9]

    After a front-end rewrite with Qt the game was relicensed 2006 under the GPLv2 license. The game was also translated and localized over the years for over two dozen languages.[15]

    Originally the game was hosted on Gna!,[16] but after Gna! began to shut down its service, the repository was moved to Google Code.[17] After google code also shut down around 2013/2014, the project was transferred to a self-hosted Mercurial repository.[18]

    The Hedgewars project was selected and participated in several Google Summer of Code (2011[19][20], 2012[21], 2013) and Google Code-in (2011[22], 2012) events; mentoring organization in 2013 was OpenSuse Linux.[23]

    As of August 2018, development is ongoing.[24]


    The player controls a group of hedgehogs. On his turn, a player can select one of his hedgehogs. The player can then use weapons and tools to kill opposing hedgehogs. Killing all enemies leads to victory. The game occurs in a destructible landscape, which is altered by the use of many weapons over the course of the match. Although the hedgehogs can move, their motion is restricted by the shape of the landscape. However, hedgehogs can use tools such as ropes and parachutes to move into otherwise inaccessible areas. Turns are usually limited in duration by a time limit or the use of a weapon. A hedgehog dies when it jumps into water or when its health is reduced to zero.

    Reception and impact[edit]

    The Polish gaming website reviewed in 2006 the game and gave 9 from 10 points.[25] Hedgewars was selected in May 2008 as "HotPick" by Linux Format print magazine.[26] PC Professionale, a PC web magazine from Italy, selected in 2008 Hedgewars as "Download of the Day".[27]

    German computer magazine C't reviewed the game in 2009.[28] In June 2009 a Free PC Game review called Hedgewars: "a Blast! This is the funniest and most addictive game you'll ever play".[29] German newspaper FAZ reviewed the game with 4/5 in 2010.[30] Youtube technology channel Hak5 reviewed the game in 2010 as part of their coverage of the E3 2010.[31]

    A Softonic review called it "fun and amusing diversion, which is great to look at with some hilarious sound effects and speech".[32]

    Czech magazine LinuxEXPRES reviewed Hedgewars favorably in 2010.[33]

    An October 2010 Softpedia review of version 0.9.15 Hedgewars awarded "Excellent" with 5/5 stars, concluding on the game: "Hedgewars is an amazing game and it’s no wonder that is one of the most downloaded and highest rated titles from Ubuntu Software Center. It has something for everyone, it can be played either by young or older people and we wish it could capture a more wider audience.".[34] In October 2011 Unixmen reviewed Hedgewars in detail.[35]

    MakeUseOf named Hedgewars in 2017 among the "20 Best Open Source Video Games".[36]

    Hedgewars was also used in research regarding the social dynamic and impact of (multiplayer) games,[37][38][39] and also Jane McGonigal's 2015 book SuperBetter.[40] The game was also used in sociological research and papers.[41][42][43][44][45]

    Usage and popularity[edit]

    Hedgewars download numbers from its main distribution site Gna! between February 2009 and February 2017 (several month inbetween missing). Spikes in April 2010 and November 2011 are due to new released versions.

    Hedgewars is popular Freeware; it was downloaded from the central download on Gna! between February 2009 and February 2017 at least 3,500,000 times and was the most popular game on Gna! in 2010.[46][47][48][49][50][51][52][53][54][55][56][57][58][59][60][61][62][63][64][65][66][67][68][69][70][71][72][73][74][75][76][77][78][79][80][81][82][83][84][85][86][87]

    Various other freeware download websites offer the game; they accumulated 130,000 game downloads over the years: for instance counted in July 2018 63,000 downloads,[88] Softpedia 4,000 for Linux,[89] 23,000,[90] Softonic 32,000,[32][91][92][93][94] 13,957.[95]

    In 2011 Hedgewars was among the top ten free applications in Apple's Mac app store and highlighted for the store's launch.[10][11][12]

    Hedgewars, being fully DFSG conform with also free assets, is included in various Linux distros, for instance Debian[96] (with ~1000s of installations[97]), Ubuntu[98] (with 37k installations[99]), Fedora,[100] OpenSUSE,[101] and Archlinux.[102]

    The game was also packed on several game magazines' coverdisks,[103] for instance Thinkdigit July 2010[104] or Windows: The Official Magazine 2012-07[105] with a circulation in the 100,000s.

    The game is also played in bigger LAN party, technology conferences and esport tournaments, for instance on the Chaos Communication Congress 2017[106] (15.000 attendees[107]), or the French "L'Agenda du Libre" conference in 2015.[108]
