Hedgewars is a free and open source artillery video game. Players are controlling teams of pink, round hedgehogs and fight using a wide arsenal of weapons, ranging from baseball bats to explosive fruits, and a range of tools.[2][3][4][5] The game is multiplayer by nature and may be played over network, with other players using the same seat or against bots.[6] Multiple platforms are supported, including FreeBSD, iOS, Linux, MacOS and Windows.[7] While the main theme of the game is a battle, the fight is comical, resembling humour found in animated series like Looney Tunes, and contains no gore or realistic brutality.

Heavily inspired by Worms,[2][6] Hedgewars attempts to provide its own unique features and gameplay.[8] The program is shipped with a selection of level themes, player skins and sound effects in many languages. Players may download and use mods, which introduce new game rules and goals.[9] The content may be acquired both from the official download center and a community-run service.[10][11]

    Gameplay[edit]

The game is turn-based. Each team receives a time slice during which a hedgehog may take actions. A player may move, fire weapons, use tools or yield.[12] The game is operated mostly using a keyboard, however some items require a pointing device. Defeating other teams, which is usually the goal, requires strategic planning, managing limited resources, utilizing the terrain, and mastering the use of weapons and tools. Each of nearly 60 items available in game has its unique properties, which are further affected by wind, game configuration and - in some cases - offer additional modes and settings.

In the course of a game crates with bonus weapons and medkits fall from the sky. Land and floating air mines, and explosive barrels are obstacles to the players, but may as well be creatively used to players's advantage. Some weapons cause fires, which may burn through multiple rounds and hurt hedgehogs. The bottom of the map is covered with water in which hedgehogs may drown. To avoid stalemates, after a certain number of rounds water level rises each turn.

    Game modes[edit]

Hedgewars offers multiple game modes resembling other games:

    • Free-for-all: each player tries to eliminate all other opponents. With exception of a few utilities, a single weapon may be used once each turn. The last standing team is the winner.
    • Capture the flag: teams try to capture a flag belonging to another player and bring it to where their own flag is located. Hedgewars, being a turn-based game, makes this mode much less dynamic than a typical first-person shooter. A few utilities, like teleportation or flying vehicles, allows quick movement of a hedgehog across the map and scoring in a single turn, but those are at a very limited supply.
    • Highlander: following the idea behind deck-building games and using the theme of Highlander, in this mode each hedgehog has its own set of weapons and gains health by damaging other units (including player's own). The team that survives the longest is the winner.
    • Mutant: each team has only a single hedgehog and a fixed set of weapons. A player, that kills another player’s unit, becomes a "mutant". Mutants have much more health points and powerful weapons, but at the same time their health is slowly deteriorating and are being hunted for by all other participants.
    • Space invasion: a variation of Asteroids, in which hedgehogs fly into space and throw explosive barrels at opponents.
    • Shoppa: a skill-based mode in which players have only a rope at their disposition, occasionally obtaining rare crates with weapons. To fight opponents, one is required to use their competence in using rope to fly across the map and push other hedgehogs.

Other modes, based on elements specific to Hedgewars, are also available:

    • Continental supplies: in the beginning players choose a category to which their team belongs, what later determines their special abilities and the weapons they receive.
    • Monarchy: a community-developed add-on, that introduces more complex rules. Each player randomly receives a role: a monarch, an assassin, a guard or a tractor. The role determines team's goals and winning conditions, but they are secret - with the exception of the role of monarch. A player also chooses a special ability, which greatly influences both their style of playing and how other participants approach them.
