helen or the band helen, is an Australian all girls punk rock band, formed in 2020. The band, founded in a small country town of Rockhampton, located in Central Queensland, Australia, is made of it's four members. Helen consists of vocalist/guitarist Emily Whitney, vocalist/guitarist Eden Connor, drummer Dayna McLiver and bassist Indi Evans. With their roots coming from bands inspired from the punk rock, metal and alternate music subcultures, helen creates loud and in your face sounds with underlying tones of teenage and punk angst.
Name Origin[edit][edit]
It has been unclear exactly why helen became the name of the band. Sources close to the band stating that the name has come from a mixture of experiences the band has had with the name itself. It has been of the general idea, that the name helen has come as a synonym for the slang term 'Karen' which gained popularity during 2020. It has also been revealed that the name helen originated after Helen of Troy, who is featured in Greek Mythology. Overall, there is no actual reason why helen is the name of the band.
Members[edit][edit]
Members of the band include Eden Connor on lead guitar and vocals, Emily Whitney on guitar and vocals, Dayna McLiver on the drums and Indi Evans as bass and vocals. Eden and Indi met Emily and Dayna at a local skatepark, and had no idea of the musical talent either of the girls possessed. Eden and Indi, after having a single jamming session with Emily asked if Emily knew of any drummers, to which Emily responded with suggesting Dayna, now including Dayna in the band. Quickly, the girls formed their band in late 2020.
Eden Connor, the bands lead guitarist, is the only band member with the most musical experience, with the rest of the band, only playing their instruments on and off for a few months before the band even started. Since the formation of the band, the members state they've been relying on Eden's musical knowledge to keep them on the right track. Emily Whitney, the band's lead vocalist has been singing since she can remember and only learned guitar a few years ago. The band's drummer Dayna McLiver and bassist Indi Evans, have only been playing their instruments for roughly two months before the band properly formed.
Musical Inspiration[edit][edit]
helen pulls it's inspiration from punk rock and metal subcultures. The songs written and played by helen are written from the member's personal experiences and battles with mental health and their experiences in love. The band joked during a Q&A session on their Instagram page that their musical inspiration have come from artists in completely different genres, such as Skrillex and Smosh. Based on the music helen is planning to release, the real music inspiration comes from already established punk and emo bands, such as My Chemical Romance, The Cranberries, Stand Atlantic and Paramore.
It has been stated by members of the band, that they believe there is a distinct lack of all female punk/emo bands in the music industry. Indi Evans has stated, "As much as we love seeing punk and alternative bands like Stand Atlantic and Rivals, which all have a female lead, I feel like the industry and the punk/emo genre still needs to do more work to make room for all girl bands, so we can see more women doing what they love".
Style Inspiration[edit][edit]
helen's members have a very recognisable style. From their inspiration coming from already established genres, the members have an established style dipping into the emo fashion subculture, as well as proudly expressing their support for the goth and indie subcultures as well. The members, all with brightly coloured hair and high platform boots have had their fashion compared to the likes of Kiss and Motley Crue. Their fashion inspiration falling to its bare bones, it can be broken down to being heavily inspired by emo, scene and gothic cultures. It has also been reported that helen draws a lot of their fashion inspiration from old school cartoon character such as Felix the Cat and Betty Boop.
Releases[edit][edit]
