Helios Seet
Helios Seet[1] is a Malaysian fashion designer. He is known for his earthy-toned, rustic avant-garde style. He won the prize of Modern Chinese Design Award - Fashion Design Category in 2014, at Beijing, China.[2]
Career
Helios Seet received his education in Textile and Fashion Design from Malaysian Institute of Art in 2016. During his studies, he was already designing clothes for his brand, which was selling under contract showrooms in China. Also while in school, Seet's graduate collection was selected and shown at the Malaysian Institute of Art 50th anniversary gala night.
Since graduating, Helios Seet has been presenting his collections each year in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Helios Seet collaborated with Malaysian artist Ah Piao in 2017 and 2019, on his art-fashion crossover installation for the collection fashion shows for the 2018 and 2020 collections that feature both emerging and established artists from Malaysia and abroad. He has also collaborated with Malaysian ethnic wear designer Kenny Loh[3] on hand-beaded shoes for Helios Seet, 2022 The 6th collection.
Helios Seet designs are known for their rustic, fluid characteristics, by experimenting with natural dyes and digital prints, the use of low saturation colours, and heavily hand-crafted techniques, giving them an exotic vibe.[4] In the Episode 273: The Rusticity & Nature of Helios Seet[5], a BFM interview, Helios Seet has characterized his own brand as "Timeless, rustic, and philosophical[6]". Some of the clients and media described his philosophy as Wabi-Sabi or Zen, because contrary to the standards in the fashion industry, Helios Seet imports fabrics in small orders, and reuses certain plain fabric in different dyed or surface designs, so the brand shows its consciousness to society and the environment. Since 2020 (2021 The 5th Collection), Helios Seet has presented his collection in digital fashion show form due to the pandemic.
Seet consistently inputs his unique aesthetic not only in fashion design, but also in working on lifestyle and interior decoration for a luxury apartment at Pavilion Kuala Lumpur Residence, fashion showroom windows displays and cocktail events.
