Helvete: A Journal of Black Metal Theory is a double-blind peer reviewed open access journal dedicated to to black metal theory, published by the independent publisher Punctum Books. Black metal theory intentionally stretches the definition of academia, and thus Helvete accepts "non-, para-, and proto-academic" submissions such as commentaries, literary fragments, and artwork in addition to more traditionally scholarly articles.[1]

Helvete maintains that black metal theory is "not to be confused with a metal studies, music criticism, ethnography, or sociology," but rather a "a speculative and creative endeavor, one which seeks ways of thinking that 'count' as black metal events—and... how black metal might count as thinking."[2] It rejects any attempt separate music theory and metal, "preferring to take the left-hand path by insisting on some kind of connaturality between the two, a shared capacity for nigredo."[2] In "Mythosmaschine Metal: Viel Lärm um nichts?", Dominik Irtenkauf noted Helvete's exploration of the artistic aspects of black metal.[3]

Helvete was founded in 2011 by Zareen Price, after a black metal symposium was held in London,[4] and released its first issue in Winter 2013.[5] Niall Scott and Amelia Ishmael serve as the journal's editors-in-chief.[6][7] Steven Shakespeare, Aspasia Stephano, and Benjamin Woodard have all contributed as guest editors.[4][6][8] In addition to her work as co-editor, Ishmael also curates visual art projects for publication in the journal.[4] Helvete works in conjunction with with the International Society for Metal Studies and its Metal Music Studies journal.[9]
