He is known for his contributions to India's advertising industry over a span of nearly four decades, as well as for his work in contemporary painting, traditional Rangoli art, and visual-poetic writing. His works have been featured in regional and national publications, including Sakal and the Times of India.

Early life and education

Joshi graduated with a Diploma in Applied Art from Bombay Art School in 1982.[1]

Career in advertising

From 1982 to 2020, Joshi worked in India’s advertising industry, handling national and international brands as a graphic designer and art director. His clients included Panasonic, Godrej, Apollo Tyres, ICICI Bank, Eureka Forbes, Wockhardt, Alembic Pharmaceuticals, and Times Bank.Joshi's recent paintings are represented online by the contemporary art platform Artoreal.[2]

He also designed the cover for the Marathi translation of Bharat Ratna Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s poems in the book Geet Nave Gato Me (2023), published by Granthali.[3][4][5]

He has designed books for several Indian authors and worked across sectors including publishing, healthcare, tourism, and finance.

Artistic work

Joshi’s work has been exhibited in major galleries including Jehangir Art Gallery, Artists' Centre (Mumbai), Lalit Kala Akademi (Delhi), and venues in Pune and Jaipur between 2017 and 2024. His debut solo exhibition, Image to Imagery, opened in 2017 at Artist Centre, Kala Ghoda, Mumbai. A review in the Bombay Times stated:

"Hemant Joshi’s debut solo exhibition ‘Image To Imagery’ is all about seeing mundane things in life, in a completely different way."

[6]

A subsequent show was held at Balgandharva Kala Dalan in Pune from May 16–18, 2018, which press described as offering a “distinct aesthetic experience.”[7]

Between 1985 and 2000, Joshi also created large-format Rangoli artworks based on mythological and historical themes, which were exhibited across Maharashtra.[8]

Writing

In 2023, Joshi published his first poetry collection, Shabdarang, through Granthali Publishers.[9] The book combines visual abstraction with poetic minimalism and explores aesthetic values through a unique interplay of line (“Resha”) and metaphor.[10]

Joshi’s writing often merges visual aesthetics with poetic structure. Critics have described his work as “a form of visual poetry,” where lines and words coexist to reflect the subconscious and the symbolic.[11]

Joshi has argued that “lines are both form and philosophy,” advocating for art as a “dialogue with the subconscious.” His critical essays draw from Indian aesthetic theory and Western art movements, including surrealism. In the Kala Visheshank (Art Special Issue) of Navbharat (2024), his work was described as a “confluence of image and thought,” with emphasis on his minimalist visual-poetic experiments under the series Resha (Lines).[12]

He writes regular essays and columns in the Marathi-language daily Sakal, especially in the Saptarang supplement, where he explores topics such as surrealism, symbolism, and the intersections of art and emotion.[11]

Social and cultural projects

Joshi contributed as art director and visual designer for public awareness campaigns organised by Vidnyan Dhara and Arogya Yatra, focusing on science and healthcare literacy across Maharashtra.

He also collaborated with Sanskar Bharti for creative campaigns on COVID-19 safety, HIV/AIDS awareness, and their 75-year celebration event.
