Henri De Beul (1845-1900) Belgian 19th Century Realism Painter. [1]

Death: 1900, Schaerbeek, Brussels [2]

Henri de Beul was a famous 19th century Belgian realist painter. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Dendermonde and the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels.

Others have said he is influenced by the Dutch Masters as evidenced through his genre and landscape paintings.[3] Yet, the works by De Beul share many elements with the 19th century founders of Realism: Gustave Courbet, Jean-Francois Millet, and Honore Daumier.

De Beul demonstrates a splendid use of light and texture with realistic, common subject matters, i.e.: Shepherds with their flocks, Peasants milking cows, animals in pasture. His primary subject matter was, by far, the pastoral farm scene. He is most noted for his sheep paintings but he also did many other farm animals and a number of canine studies. His realistic style is done meticulously, with great attention to details so minute it is like a photograph. [4]

He exhibited extensively in Brussels, Ghent, Antwerp and Liege.

The National Trust show examples of his work in Brodick Castle in Scotland.[5]
