Henrik Petersson
Henrik Petersson (pronounced in Swedish as [hɛnːrɪk peːtɛrsɔn]), born in Uppsala, Sweden, April 6 1973, is a Swedish mathematician, high school teacher in mathematics and writer. Petersson is an associate professor at Chalmers University of Technology and works as a docent in mathematics at Hvitfeldtska high school, in Gothenburg.
Biography[edit]
Born 1973 in Uppsala, Henrik Petersson showed an early aptitude for sports, mostly cross country skiing and running, in which he has won several prizes. He notably ran the fastest of teenagers aged 14 during the Lidingö 10 kilometer track (34.50, 1987), and his current halfmarathon record is of 1h07min12s (at Borås, 1994). He was also the district champion in Uppland in both 1983 and 1985 as well as that of Småland in the years 1986, 1987 and 1989.[1] It was not until his time at the university that his discovers his passion for mathematics.[2]
In 2001, he obtained his PHD in mathematics and starts working at Chalmers, were he between 2005 and 2008 published 12 articles discussing various scientific areas. His work at the university mainly concerned linear dynamical system and theory of operation with a theoretic application on functions.[3]
Petersson began his career as a teacher in 2010 at Hvitfeldtska[4], and he is perhaps most famous thanks to his book published during that time, Problemlösningens grunder (2013), which he actively uses in his teaching.[5]
In 2019, he will publish two books called Avancera I and Avancera II, written to be used as an alternative to the books used today in the mathematics treated by the Swedish high school program. They differ from these notably in the style in which they are written, being closer to that of books used at the universities, as well as putting a larger focus on problem solving.[6]
Works as a teacher[edit]
Petersson teaches the classes of mathematical problem solving at Hvitfeldtska for the scientific class specialized in mathematics, in which he is the principal teacher.[2][5] The objective of the class is to give a challenge to students with interest and talent in the matter, in order to improve in a way that he judges impossible with the current Swedish scholar system.[2]
Thanks to his manner of teaching, many of his students have under his supervision qualified in several mathematical competitions, both national and international,[7][8] such as the Swedish final for the selection of the national team for the International Mathematics Olympiad.[9] The most recent example of this comes from the year 2019, where 4 of his students qualified for the final.[10]
In addition to his teaching at Hvitfeldtska, he also handles an online platform for high school students interested in mathematics in a broader way than would be possible in person.[11][12] The platform consists of different “modules” on different mathematical areas, and the site is financed by the foundation Solstickan.[13]
