Vardit Ringvald is the Middlebury Language School of Hebrew and C.V. Research Professor of Language and Linguistics at Middlebury College , where she teaches Hebrew and Hebrew education.
Background[edit]
Ringvald was appointed the founding director of the Middlebury School of Hebrew, part of the Middlebury College Language Schools[1], in 2008, while still serving as professor of Hebrew and director of the Hebrew program at Brandeis University. In 2013, Ringvald became a full-time professor at Middlebury where she designed and implemented a variety of programs at the school, including intensive immersive language programs for Modern Hebrew and Biblical Hebrew, a Master’s degree in teaching Hebrew as a Second language with 130 graduates and doctorate programs in research related to Hebrew language pedagogy with 19 students. She also developed a certificate program for training MA graduates [2] to mentor and coordinate Hebrew language programs at Jewish camps and informal education settings.
Dr. Ringvald began her career at Brandeis University in 1985, teaching Hebrew language, culture, and Hebrew teaching pedagogy until 2013. She founded the Hebrew Language Summer Institute at Brandeis University in 1996 and created the Master of Arts in Teaching Hebrew in 2005. Dr. Ringvald also served as a director of other language programs at Brandeis University including Arabic, Italian, French, Spanish, Chinese and Japanese.
She was a team member for developing for ACTFL (American Council on the Teaching of Foreign Languages) and the United States Department of Education the Hebrew Proficiency guidelines, the Oral Proficiency test for Hebrew, and the Hebrew proficiency curriculum frameworks for secondary and postsecondary education. Dr. Ringvald also served as chair of the SAT II for Hebrew and as advisor for Hebrew to the National Middle Eastern Language Resource Center (NMELRC). She served on the committee for Hebrew language pedagogy for the National Association of Professors of Hebrew (NAPH) and serves as a board member of the council for Hebrew Language and Culture in North America. She also served as an adviser on assessment projects for the Defense Language Institute.
According to the Israeli-American Council Vardit Ringvald is the country's leading scholar of Hebrew Pedagogy,[3], and is often referenced for her expertise on Hebrew language and language learning. [4]
