Henry Sias (born 1976) is an American lawyer and trasgender advocate. He is a member of the Democratic Party [1] and a candidate for Common Pleas Court Judge in the May 2016 primary election in Philadelphia. Prior to his candidcay for the court, he practiced law for Blank Rome, and clerked for two Pennsylvania State Supreme Court justices.[2]
Legal career[edit]
Sias graduated from Yale Law School and practiced for Blank Rome in Philadelphia. He clerked for Pennsylvania Supreme Court Justice James J. Fitzgerald III, and Justice Jane Cutler Greenspan, as well as for homicide trial judge, Judge Barbara McDermott, and Judge Kenneth Powell, a civil judge who is part of the Mass Tort Program [3]
Sias co-founded the Philadelphia Lawyers for Social Equity in 2010, a legal nonprofit known for its Expungement Project. The Expungement Project performs free criminal expungements for low-income Philadelphia residents.[4]
Candidacy for Common Pleas Court Judge[edit]
Sias is a candiadate for the Court of Common Pleas in Philadelphia in the May 2016 primary election. He is one of 48 candidates seeking ten vacancies on the Court.
He is the first transgender candidate to run for elected office in Philadelphia. If elected, he would be the first transgender man elected judge in the nation.[5]
