David T. Kollat (born July 7, 1938) is an American business executive and academic. He co-authored foundational textbooks in consumer behavior, held executive roles at L Brands, and served on multiple public boards. He was featured in a 2015 *Wall Street Journal* real-estate profile, underscoring his high-profile career.[1]

Early life and education

Kollat was born in Elkhart, Indiana, to Mildred (Good) Kollat and Walter Albert Kollat. He has one sister, Mary. His mother taught piano and worked as an administrative assistant, while his father was a superintendent at a paint manufacturer in South Bend, Indiana.

He graduated from Elkhart High School as vice president of his class and earned letters in cross country, basketball, and baseball. He played guard on the 1956 basketball team that advanced to the state finals before being eliminated by Lafayette Jefferson High School, who were defeated by Indianapolis Crispus Attucks, led by Oscar Robertson.Guffey, Greg (2006). Kollat attended Western Michigan University on a basketball scholarship. He earned an MBA in marketing and finance in 1962, and later a Doctor of Business Administration degree from Indiana University Kelley School of Business in 1966.

Kollat received an honorable discharge from the Finance Corps of the U.S. Army Reserve in 1968 with the rank of Captain.

Academic career

Kollat earned an MBA in marketing and finance (1962) from Western Michigan University and a Doctor of Business Administration (1966) from Indiana University. He co-authored the influential *Customer Impulse Purchasing Behavior* (1967), cited over 1,000 times, and *Current Problems in Consumer Behavior Research* (1970), cited over 200 times.[2] He taught marketing at Ohio State University and has served on the Fisher College of Business Dean’s Advisory Council since 1995.[3]

Business career

Kollat served as Executive Vice President and Director of Research at Management Horizons from 1972 to 1976, helping establish the Retail Intelligence System. He joined The Limited Stores (later L Brands) as Executive Vice President in 1976 and served as President of Victoria’s Secret Catalogue until 1987.[4]

He served on the boards of Big Lots, Wolverine Worldwide, Select Comfort, and others.[5] A 2007 profile described his strategic influence: “He zigs where others zag,” and recounted how he personally vetted approximately 200 candidates during a Big Lots CEO search.[6]

Awards and honors

Kollat has been inducted into the Hall of Fame at Western Michigan University,Western Michigan University Department of Marketing. (October 11, 2002). Alumni Hall of Fame. the Academy of Alumni Fellows at Indiana University,Indiana University Kelley School of Business. (1987). Academy of Alumni Fellows. and was named a Pace Setter by the Ohio State University Fisher College of Business.
