Henry Warren Sewing (1891 – 1980) founded the Douglass State Bank, the first bank owned and operated by black people in the Midwest. [1]
Early Life[edit]
Born to sharecroppers in Bremond, Texas in 1891, Sewing graduated from Tillotson College in 1915. After serving in the military in World War I, he came to Kansas City, eventually becoming an instructor at Western University in Quindaro, Kansas.[1] In 1921, Sewing began his career in the insurance industry by joining Security Health and Accident Insurance.[2]
Douglass State Bank[edit]
In 1947, he opened the Douglass State Bank in Kansas City, Kansas. His bank provided home mortgages and small business loans to African Americans, bringing economic development to the community until it closed in 1983.[1]
