Hernán Larraín Matte (born December 24, 1974) is a Chilean lawyer, who is currently president of the Political Evolution (Evópoli) political party;[1] and adjoint professor at Universidad Adolfo Ibañez. He worked as a presidential adviser under Sebastián Piñera during his first presidency.
Biography[edit]
Matte is the older son of Hernán Larraín, currently the Minister of Justice and Human Rights and Magdalena Matte, former Minister of Housing and Urban Planning. He is also the sibling of filmmakers Pablo and Juan de Dios Larraín.
He worked as a film producer with his brother Pablo in the film Fuga and then as a marketing coordinator for Sebastián Piñera's first presidential campaign.[2] In 2010 he joined the National Renewal political party. He worked as communications advisor for Piñera's first presidency until 2013, when he left the Presidency in order to create a think tank called 'Horizontal'.
He's the lead singer for a band called "El crucero del sabor" (the Flavor Cruise).
Education[edit]
Matte studied at the Universidad Finis Terrae Law School from 1993 to 1999. He obtained a Master's degree in Political Science at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile, where his thesis focused on youth, leadership and political participation in Chile (1999–2000).
In 2006 he moved to England, where he obtained an M.Sc. in Public policy at the London School of Economics, focusing his studies on comparative public policy and political communications.
Professional life and political career[edit]
In his early professional career he worked as a lawyer for Inacap, para luego incursionar como productor de la primera película de su hermano Pablo “Fuga”. Luego hizo un magíster en Ciencias Políticas en la Universidad Católica and at the same time he started working as an adjoint professor at the Governance School at the Universidad Adolfo Ibañez.[2]
In 2008 he traveled back to Chile where he worked as the general marketing advisor for Sebastián Piñera's presidential campaign, where he played a key role in the development of the TV campaingn.
In 2010 he became an advisor for President Sebastián Piñera, coordinating the polling team and leading strategic communication issues.
In march 2013, he left the Presidency to run a think tank called Horizontal, which he ran from 2013 to 2015.[3]. By the end of that year, he joined Evelyn Matthei's presidential campaign.
On May 5 2018, he was elected president of the Evópoli political party. The executive board is also joined by Secretary General Luz Poblete, and vicepresidential positions held by deputies Francisco Undurraga, Luciano Cruz-Coke, Andrés Molina; and senators Carmen Gloria Aravena and Felipe Kast.
