The Herrington Lake Monster is a cryptid purported to live within Herrington Lake in central Kentucky. Reports of the animal go back to 1972, when a professor by the name of Lawrence S Thompson claimed to have seen it.[1][2][3]
Description[edit]
The creature is described as have the snout of a pig and a curly tail, also like that of a pig. It is said to be 12-15 feet long, and it swims "moving along just above the water at about the speed of a boat with a trolling motor." Due to this appearance, it is often called the "Herrington Lake eel pig."[2][3]
Natural explanations[edit]
Multiple natural explanations have been put forth to explain the monster. Most suppose that it's a simple misidentification of wildlife, owing to the fact witness accounts only saw small sections of the animal.[2]
Catfish are the most common explanation; Prof. Lawrence himself supposes he might have seen a large catfish.[2] This explanation points out that some catfish species can grow in excess of 9 feet, which could be mistaken for much longer.[4] Floating debris is another common explanation, however eyewitnesses claim that the creature was moving too fast to be just debris.[2] One of the more outlandish explanations suppose that the monster is a yet unknown prehistoric species of creature which was isolated in the limestone caves of the valley, that, when flooded for hydroelectric power, allowed the creature to venture up to the surface.[1][2][3]
