Early life[edit]
Paul Raini Castelluzzo was born in San Diego, California. He grew up listening to music from artists such as The Beach Boys, T.Rex, The Beatles and The Velvet Underground.[2] He started playing guitar when he was around 6 or 7 years old along with his older brother Charlie and had a passion for punk and classic rock. He developed an interest in jazz and blues during his time at high school and played in a number of bands.[3]
Career[edit]
2017-2018: Career Beginnings[edit]
After graduating high school at 17, Castelluzzo planned to attend music school in New York but he changed his mind after music producer Rodney Jerkins asked if he wanted to work for him. This led to collaborations with Romeo Santos, Dominic Fike, Snoh Aalegra, Anderson .Paak and the Free Nationals, Mac Miller and Genesis Owusu.[4] Following the tragic death of his sister in late 2017, Castelluzzo had a sudden urge to start writing his own music.[1] He says: “After she passed, I couldn’t go outside or look at the sky because I felt overwhelmingly insignificant. I never sang before but the night I wrote my first song as Hether the words came pouring out. I gravitated towards the sun-bleached sounds of my childhood. The creative process was for my escape, but the making of the music was for my sister.”[5] Castelluzzo came up with the name Hether while watching Michael Lehmann's 1989 film 'Heathers'.[6] He wrote his first song as Hether in early 2018.[1]
2019-2020: Hether Who? and WULM (acoustic) / Morning Bells[edit]
Hether released his debut single 'When U Loved Me' on July 10 2019 through his own label hether4theweather.[7][8] It gained recognition after being featured on Kendall Jenner's Instagram story.[9] His second single 'Shy' was released on November 7 2019 and two days later he released his 6 track debut EP 'Hether Who?'.[10][11]
2021-present: Sticky Thumb and Play it Pretty[edit]
Hether's debut studio album 'Sticky Thumb' was released on January 15 2021.[12] He completed his third extended play titled 'Play it Pretty' in early 2022 and it is expected to be released on June 10.[13] He released four singles as part of the EP.
Artistry[edit]
Hether is known for his uniquely high vocal range and his use of wacky psychedelic effects. He takes much inspiration from 1960s/70s beach and punk music and admires artists such as Brian Wilson, Lou Reed, Marc Bolan, Jimi Hendrix, The Beatles, The Ramones, Sonny Smith, and Ruban Nielson.[14][15] He frequently uses a reel-to-reel tape recorder to record his music.[3]
