Making the movie

In December 2024, the makers of the movie got money from Screen Flanders to help make it.[1] In February 2025, it was announced that Matteo Simoni would play the main role.[2] Teodora Ana Mihai directed the movie. It was made by the company Menuetto Film. They worked together with other companies called Les Films du Fleuve, Topkapi Films, and Leitwolf Filmproduktion. Groups like the Flanders Audiovisual Fund (VAF), the Belgian Tax shelter, and the Netherlands Film Fund also gave money to help.[3]

Filming

Most of the filming happened in Flanders, especially in the city of Antwerp.[1] Filming finished in early May 2025. This was close to the 40th anniversary of the real disaster.[3]

Release

Heysel 85 was shown for the first time in February 2026. This happened at the 76th Berlin International Film Festival in a special section.[4] The main actress, Violet Braeckman, was named a "European Shooting Star" for 2026.[5] The movie will come out in cinemas in Belgium in the autumn of 2026.[6]
