Himanshu Thakkar is an Indian otorhinolaryngologist based in Rajkot, Gujarat. He is known for several documented unusual surgical cases, including the endoscopic removal of foreign objects from respiratory passages, one of which got him a place in the Limca book of records.
Biography
Himanshu Thakkar is a Gujarathi by birth. He completed his MBBS from Pramukhswami Medical College, Karamsad, in 1993, followed by a postgraduate diploma in Otorhinolaryngology (DLO) from the same institution. He later received additional training in temporal bone dissection and ENT surgery at hospitals in Mumbai, including PD Hinduja, KEM, and Nanavati Hospitals. He specializes in the removal of foreign body using endoscopic techniques. One of his significant achievements is the removal of the longest polyp (8 cm) endoscopically from a 55 year old patient[1] featured in the Limca book of records.
Thakkar has received letters of appreciation from the honorable prime minister Shri Narendra Modi and the collector of Rajkot Smt. Ramya Mohan acknowledging his contributions to the medical fraternity. Dr. Thakkar's professional excellence was further honored when he received the distinguished "IMA Dr. C.S. Thakar National Award" during the IMA National Conference (IMANATCON-2013) held in Rajamundry, Andhra Pradesh,[2] and the prestigious "Award of Merit" for his excellent contributions to the medical profession, presented by Union Minister of Science & Technology Dr. Jithendra Singh at a special Doctor's Day celebration on July 1, 2014, at Hotel Taj Palace, New Delhi[3] (picture on page 74). He has also been bestowed with the "Pride of Saurashtra" Award by the Bajrang Mitra Mandal Trust in Rajkot, acknowledging his significance to the region. His remarkable endoscopic removal of a plastic whistle from a child's windpipe after an extraordinarily long duration was officially recognized and documented in the India Book of Records 2023,[4] highlighting his extraordinary skill in managing complex foreign body cases.
Thakkar is active in social activities and has been an advocate for practicing precautionary care to avoid medical complications in future. He is credited with several articles and journals briefing about endoscopic nasal surgery and conditions.[5][6][7]
In 2007, Thakkar established an ENT and dental practice in Rajkot, registered under the Bombay Nursing Act with the Rajkot Municipal Corporation.

Thakkar has performed several surgical procedures that have received media attention:
- In 2023, he performed the endoscopic removal of a plastic whistle from a boy's windpipe that had been present for seven years. This case was documented in the India Book of Records.[4]
- He removed a metal nut from a four-year-old child's nose, which was reported in regional and international media.[8]
- In another case, he surgically extracted a chikoo seed from a woman's windpipe that had been lodged there for two months.[9]
- Thakkar has also documented rare medical conditions, including an ectopic tooth in a nasal cavity and a case of Leiomyosarcoma of the inferior turbinate.[10]
- According to the Limca Book of Records 2025, Thakkar performed an endoscopic removal of an 8 cm nasal polyp, which was recognized as a record-setting procedure.[1]
