Dr. Ghazala Mulla (Urdu: ڈاکٹر غزالہ ملا‎), born in the tinsel city of Mumbai, India to middle-class hard-working parents.

Biography

Early life and education

She was the sixth girl born to her parents. She passed her matriculation at the age of fourteen with flying colours. Her father, Ibrahim Tirandaz, strongly believed that his children must receive a good education, so he admitted her to Chhatrapati Shivneri College, with a Science stream in Junnar, Pune, Maharashtra. After passing Std. XII, she joined Z.V.M. Unani Medical College in Pune, Maharashtra, India for her medical studies. She completed her medical graduation in 1993 and received the degree of BUMS, a dream her father cherished for her but was not there to witness and celebrate.

Career

After completing her medical graduation, she joined as a resident doctor at Bharat Modi's Asha Nursing home located in Padmavati, Pune, Maharashtra, India. After working for three years at Modi’s Nursing home, she met her colleague Dr. Arshad Pathan who, after inquiring about her job, advised her to approach Z.V.M. Unani Medical College and hospital authorities at the Azam Campus, Pune, Maharashtra, India, where a lecturer position was vacant. She approached Dr. Bharat Modi, who advised her to join the college because it was always better to be a lecturer at a government-recognised college, which also happened to be her alma mater. Heeding her colleague and mentor’s advice, she applied and was immediately appointed as a lecturer.

Currently, she is the Head of the Department of Physiology. She teaches physiology to undergraduate medical students. For higher education, she approached the Department of Ayurveda at University of Pune where she completed her M.Phil in Kaya Chikitsa. She also completed a course in medical genetics from Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik, Maharashtra, India.

She is an Approved Post Graduate Teacher and Ph.D. Guide at Maharashtra University of Health Sciences, Nashik, India. She has been a guest faculty member at other colleges of different faculties, such as pharmacy, dental, nursing, and the senior college of science faculty. She has also launched an online course on Typology.

Resource person

She has delivered lectures on "Cupping Therapy" and "Massage Therapy" as a resource person in cities such as New Delhi, Aligarh, Hyderabad, Kerala, Goa, Bhopal, Chennai, Jaipur, Indore, Bareilly, Deoband, Kolkata, Patna, Mumbai, Lucknow, Allahabad, and Pune.

Ghazala Mulla has presented numerous research papers at various international conferences in countries including United Kingdom, Turkey, Sri Lanka, Abu Dhabi, and Dubai. She has also presented many research papers at national conferences in cities such as New Delhi, Aligarh, Hyderabad, Kerala, Goa, Bhopal, Chennai, Jaipur, Indore, Bareilly, Deoband, Kolkata, Patna, Mumbai, Lucknow, Allahabad, and Pune.

Research work

Ghazala always possessed an intensely curious mind that delved into the depths of discoursing, designing, and searching for answers to validate commonly followed Unani medical practices. This thirst led to many scientific studies and research projects. Listed below are some of her prominent achievements.

A major research project entitled "Classification of Human Population Based on HLA Gene Polymorphism and the Concept of Mizaj (Temperament) in Unani System of Medicine" is approved and funded by the Ministry of AYUSH, New Delhi under the EMR project.

A minor research project entitled "Artificial Neural Network models for exploring relations between Unani, Ayurvedic Siddha, and Homeopathic temperament classifications and development of a software for mutual conversions" is approved and sponsored by the University of Pune.

A major research project entitled "Unani Anti-psoriatic Topical Nano particulate Drug Delivery systems” in collaboration with Allana College of Pharmacy, Azam Campus, Camp, Pune is approved and funded by the Ministry of AYUSH, New Delhi under the EMR project.

A major research project entitled "Validation of Traditional Unani Plant Products And Their Ingredients For Anticancer Effect on hepato-cellular Carcinoma”, in collaboration with the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of IT and Biotechnology and Bharati Vidyapeeth Deemed University, Pune is approved and funded by the Ministry of AYUSH, New Delhi under the EMR project.

She is the first author to write a book on "Cupping therapy". The title of her book is "Hijama Therapy—A highway to Health", which is approved as a reference book for the BUMS syllabus by the Central Council of Indian Medicine (Unani) New Delhi, Govt. of India. She has also written health-related articles in various health magazines. Further, she also wrote a chapter on "Elementary Genetics" for a book entitled “Munafe-ul-Aza” volume 1, published by the National Council for Promotion of Urdu Language, New Delhi, Govt. of India.

Awards and honours

• She received the "EXCELLENCE IN UNANI" award from the Hon'ble health minister of U.P., Mr. Ahmed Hasan at Indira Gandhi Prathishthan Kendra, Lucknow, India on 15 February 2014, organized by Bharat Seva Sansthan (BSS) & Association of Ayurvedic Professionals of North America (AAPNA) at the 10th International Conference on "Ayurveda & Lifestyle Disorders".
