Hiroshi Ohno (大野 博司, Ohno Hiroshi, born october 27, 1958) is a Japanese immunologist and microbiologist. He is Deputy Director of the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences and Team Leader of the Laboratory for Intestinal Ecosystem; a visiting professor at the Immunobiology Laboratory at Yokohama City University Graduate School of Medical Life Science; and a visiting professor at Chiba University Graduate School of Medicine.

Ohno has focused on the impact of gut microbiota on host health and pathological conditions, notably researching M cells, which are antigen-uptake cells in the epithelial layer covering mucosa-associated lymphoid tissue. He has published leading research on the molecular mechanisms underlying host-gut microbiota interactions.

Early Life and Education[edit]

Ohno was born in Tokyo, Japan, in 1958. Due to his father's job, he moved frequently as a child, attending schools in Kyushu, Mito City, Tochigi Prefecture, Tottori Prefecture, and Yonago Higashi High School. He developed an interest in biology during junior high school and decided to pursue a career in medical school. He earned his M.D. degree from Chiba University in 1983 and his Ph.D. from Chiba University in 1991.

Professional Career[edit]

From 1983 to 1987, Ohno worked as an anesthesiologist at various hospitals, including Chiba University, Tokyo Employees' Pension Hospital, and Chiba Cancer Center. He then pursued a PhD in molecular biology at Chiba University, focusing on T cell receptors and knockout mouse technology. After a stint at the University of Cologne, he joined the Juan Bonifacino Lab at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) from 1993 to 1997, publishing research in Science.

In 1999, Ohno became a professor at Kanazawa University, researching M cells. From 2002, he led the Laboratory for Epithelial Immunobiology at RIKEN Research Center for Allergy and Immunology, focusing on gut microbiota. Currently, he is Deputy Director of the RIKEN Center for Integrative Medical Sciences and a visiting professor at Yokohama City University and Chiba University.
