His Wheels International

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

His Wheels International (HWI) is a not-for-profit cycling organization. Their mission is to provide hand-pedaled three-wheeled cycles we affectionately call trikes for the disabled in the third world through global partnerships as a tool for expanding Christ's Kingdom.

Upon entering their ninth year of ministry, they are narrowing their focus from bicycles and hand-pedaled tricycles to concentrate their efforts on their hand-pedaled three-wheeled tricycle, affectionately called a trike. Since 2005 they have prototyped 22 different trikes, have had three production runs, and have designed an entire manufacturing process. HWI has partnered with schools, universities, hospitals and other organizations to get the trike to those needing such transportation on five continents. Trikes have been assembled, fabricated, and manufactured in over a dozen countries.

As they continue forward, they are building a university trike consortium whereby they can encourage students across the country and around the world to consider how they can use their talents and professional training to impact the lives of those less fortunate. Students have done projects and internships with us HWI in the field of Kinesiology from the University of Illinois, Chicago (IL), Communications and Christian Formation and Ministry from Wheaton College (IL), Journalism from Roosevelt University (IL), Business from Spring Arbor University (MI), Vocational training from Immanuel Coe Technical School in Hyderabad, India, and Engineering from Messiah College (PA). HWI is in communication with other universities and different partnerships throughout the country and around the world to help move the trike project forward.

In addition, they plan to launch a trike community forum on their new website that will be up and running by July 1, 2013. The goal is to make our trike plans available for free to those with an interest in helping individuals with lower extremity disabilities in third world countries. In many ways they are still in the bicycle business but with a much narrower focus where the need is just as great. Thanks again for partnering with HWI.

History: HWI began in 2005 as a bicycle service organization assisting Christian Missions in providing bicycles and bicycle expertise to nationals throughout the world. HWI’s goal is to mobilize God’s work worldwide using bicycles. Their basic values combine a passion for bicycles, God’s word and our neighbors around the world.

Since 2005 when HWI began to June 2013 they have distributed nearly 1,700 bicycles to people affiliated with ninety countries from six continents. Recipients included refugees, immigrants, international students, ex-offenders, the homeless, missionaries from over 40 mission organizations and others. HWI has partnered with over 50 national organizations, churches, and schools.

Between May 2005-June 2013 HWI collected, refurbished and resold old bikes. Local sales fund national and global projects. Partnering with other organizations enables HWI to send bikes overseas. In addition this organization is exploring a prototype of a three-wheeled hand-pedaled bicycle for the disabled.

The organization began in May 2005. HWI is incorporated in the State of Illinois. His Wheels is also IRS 501(c)-3 tax exempt, not-for-profit status.
