Historical Writers Association
The Historical Writers Association (HWA) is a specialist authors' organisation in the United Kingdom founded in 2010 open to historians and historical novelists.[1][2]
The HWA promotes and supports historical writing, including through annual awards (the HWA Crowns) modelled after the Crime Writers' Association Gold Dagger awards, its publication Historia, online resources and regular members events.[3]
Membership is open to authors of full-length fiction and non-fiction historical works, published in the last five years by a recognised publishing house, and their agents, editors and publishers.
The founding chair of the HWA was Manda Scott, who handed over to Imogen Robertson in 2015.[4]
HWA Crown Awards
The HWA Crown awards are awarded for full-length works published in English in the UK: the HWA Gold Crown, for the best historical novel published that year; the HWA Debut Crown, for debut novels; and the Non-Fiction Crown, for non-fiction history. The Debut Crown was first published in 2012, with the Gold Crown and Non-Fiction Crown added in 2017.[5][6]
For the purposes of awards, the HWA defines 'historical fiction' as having bulk of the narrative of the work submitted must take place at least thirty-five years prior to publication. For non-fiction, the key events must have taken place, or the subject have been primarily active, at least thirty-five years prior to publication.[7]
