Hitachi Energy Ltd. is a global technology company that provides sustainable energy solutions to customers in the buildings, utilities, industries, and infrastructure sectors. As of 2023, the company has an installed base in more than 140 countries.
The company is a subsidiary of multinational conglomerate, Hitachi Ltd, and was established in 2021 as Hitachi Energy Ltd. The company was formerly known as Hitachi ABB Power Grids, following a merger with Hitachi Ltd, and ABB Power Grids in 2020.
Hitachi Energy is headquartered in Zurich, Switzerland and has over 40,000 employees based in 90 countries.[1]
History
Founding and incorporation
In July 2020, ABB Power Grids divested 80.1 percent of its power grid business to Hitachi Ltd. The merger resulted in the formation of Hitachi ABB Power Grids[2].
Moving forward as Hitachi Energy
In October 2021, Hitachi ABB Power Grids formally started operating as Hitachi Energy. In December 2022, it was confirmed that Hitachi acquired the remaining 19.9 percent shares from ABB Ltd[3].

High-voltage equipment

In December 2021, Hitachi Energy partnered with National Grid[4], on a pilot project to replace the greenhouse gas sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) in installed high-voltage gas insulated lines in National Grid's Richborough site in Kent. The SF6 gas was replaced with a fluoronitrile-based gas that has a significantly lower environmental impact.

Hitachi Energy offers a complete range of power transformers, traction transformers, insulation and components, digital sensors, and transformer services.
Grid integration
The company builds solutions for integrating renewable energy sources into the grid to enhance flexibility and resilience. Hitachi Energy also has vast energy storage technology, which includes batteries, and storage systems that help manage peak demand management, load shifting and backup power.
In October 2021, Hitachi Energy designed and built the 1,400 MW North Sea Link[5] for Statnett and National Grid, that allows Norway to import wind power from the UK, and the UK to import hydropower from Norway through a 720-kilometer high-voltage direct current (HVDC) underwater cable. The North Sea Link interconnector is the longest subsea link in the world.
In March 2023, Hitachi Energy and Petrofac Ltd was awarded a $14.09 billion USD framework agreement[6] by Dutch-German electricity grid operator TenneT to supply offshore platforms and onshore converter stations.
Grid automation
Hitachi Energy supplies automation solutions that enable efficient management and monitoring of substations, which helps optimize grid operations.
In 2022, Hitachi Energy completed a renewable energy microgrid integration project for the remote community of Gull Bay First Nation in Canada[7]. Since the community was not connected to the provincial grid, they had relied on diesel generators since the 1960s. Hitachi Energy worked closely with the community to design and build a microgrid, that reduces the use of diesel fuel by 30%, or approximately 130,000 liters (34,000 gal) per year. The renewable energy microgrid and diesel generating station are interconnected to maximize the use of renewable energy.
In 2022, Hitachi Energy launched Hitachi Vegetation Manager (HVM) alongside Hitachi Vantara; the technology uses LiDAR, thermal and satellite imagery, and artificial intelligence that utilities can use to survey vegetation on power lines, which can help prevent outages and wildfires. The company piloted the technology with US power provider Louisville Gas & Electric Company and Kentucky Utilities Company[8]. In the United States, it is estimated that 25% of all outages are caused by vegetation and in 2021, the second largest wildfire in California, the Dixie Fire, started when a tree came into contact with a power line.
Services
Hitachi Energy provides customers with service solutions across the entire lifecycle of assets. The primary focus of the company’s service function is to ensure resilient and reliable operations across the entire energy infrastructure, and to support the digital transformation of the global energy system. The services provided are consultancy, asset management, installation, maintenance, optimization, training, troubleshooting, and recycling for equipment for the installed base. The company currently has 65+ Service centers located throughout the world, and services the largest installed base of OEM equipment.
Pioneering Technologies
In the 1960s, Hitachi Energy installed the world’s first gas-insulated switchgear technology in an underground substation in Zurich, Switzerland. The technology was a milestone in enabling more sustainable and reliable energy. It was also significantly smaller than an AIS substation that was previously used, and meant that substations no longer needed to take up acres of open spaces but could instead be hidden within buildings, on rooftops or underground.
In the mid-1980s, Hitachi Energy started developing subsea transformer technology, and introduced the first subsea transformer in 1999. Hitachi Energy liquid-filled, pressure-compensated subsea transformers are rated for depths up to 3,000 meters. In the last decade, the company has supplied twenty subsea transformers worldwide.
In 2017, Hitachi Energy was commissioned by Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd. to deliver the world’s first multi-terminal UHVDC transmission link, enabling the transmission of a clean power supply for 90 million people. The link comprises four terminals in three converter stations with a 33 percent continuous overload rating, enabling an 8,000 MW conversion – which is one of the most powerful HVDC transmission systems ever built.
In 2018, Hitachi Energy built the world’s most powerful ultrahigh-voltage direct current (UHVDC) convertor transformer for China. The 3,000 kilometer Changji-Guquan, 1,100 kilovolt, 12 gigawatt, UHVDC link is capable of safely and reliably providing enough power for around 12 million people.
Sustainability
Hitachi Energy’s product and services are designed to build a sustainable energy system worldwide. Since January 2022, Hitachi Energy uses 100 percent renewable energy[9] to power all its operations, which is part of the company’s ongoing sustainability plan. The company has plans to become carbon-neutral in all operations (Scope 1, 2 & 3) and halve the greenhouse gas (CO2 e) emissions along its value chain by 2030.
In 2023, Hitachi Energy received the EcoVadis gold award, placing them in the top 1 percent of energy companies and top 5 percent of companies globally.
