In 1979, Ken Barrington set about turning his local Sheffield sports shop into one of the biggest suppliers of teamwear in the UK[1]. His sports shop, “The House of Barrington”[2] was his starting place and by adding, “Official Teamster Top,” his name was formed. Using its acronym HOBOTT[3], a new brand was born.

The first port of call was signing up his local club, Sheffield United[4]. Having been a fan since birth, this was the obvious place to start. Despite the fact that the Blades had just been relegated to Division 3, their lowest league position for 80 years, Barrington saw an opportunity. It was during their first season that Sheffield United went on to record the largest attendance figures at that level with 49,309[5] fans against local rivals, Sheffield Wednesday, a record that is still held to this day.

This was the defining moment for Hobott and it became a significant player in kit manufacturing, producing iconic kits for 17 different clubs across the leagues. Including Brentford,Preston North End and Wigan Athletic. By the end of the 80s Hobott’s time in the limelight faded as new technologies and larger international firms made it difficult for local British brands to survive. However, the story of Hobott survives from a decade when football was local and Mr Barrington was able to create kits for his local side, a dream many of us wish we could realise today.
