Germán Alejandro Garmendia Aranis, (born 25 April 1990) known as HolaSoyGerman,[1] is a Chilean YouTube comedian from Copiapó, Chile. As of September 2014, his YouTube channel has over nineteen million subscribers, ranking him as the second most subscribed channel on YouTube.[2] In August 2014, he won the "Icon of the Year" prize from MTV Millennial Awards 2014.[3]
Early life
Germán was born in Copiapó, Chile. His father died in a car accident while he was a child. He and his brother were originally not living together, but he moved to Los Vilos and lived with both his brother and mother for most of his childhood. When he turned thirteen, he started a band along with his brother, called "Feeling Every Sunset". Germán uploaded his first YouTube video in 2011, after he was encouraged by a friend to upload the video onto YouTube. After doing so, he became more and more famous on YouTube, and was forced to quit being in the band, as he wanted to devote most of his time to making YouTube videos.[4][5]
Incident in Mexico
In April 2014, during a live performance organized by "Telmex Aldea Digital" in the Plaza of the Constitution of Mexico City, there was a mishap because of an excess of attendees. The result was that ten young people presented with minor injuries, and several fainted because of the long wait in the sun. It took the intervention of the police and paramedics to resolve the incident. Although police numbered at 500 safety features and a group of civil protection, attendance exceeded expectations, with about 35,000 attendees according to police estimations. This mishap was due to an excess of attendees insisting on entering the marquee although there wasn't room for more public. Because of the long waiting and disorganization, the people overwhelmed the police that were guarding the premises. The event had to be canceled and the security reinforced to avoid the chaos in the crowd. Germán had to leave the square; he later apologized to his followers.[6][7]
Personal life
Germán currently lives in Mexico, where he moved to after living in Los Angeles for a while. He says his goal is to become an actor while he is living in Mexico.
