Holden Matthews (arsonist)
Holden James Matthews (born 1997/1998) is an American arsonist and white supremacist.[1] He is currently accused of burning down three black historic churches in Louisiana that were part of the St. Landry Parish. Authorities believed that Matthews was motivated by interests in black metal and paganism.[2] Additionally, his room had the words "black metal" spray painted in a wall according to a Facebook page and he had a comment online where he was talking about how a movie portrayed Varg Vikernes. Matthews is currently facing three counts of arson of religious buildings.[3] The arsons took place on March 26, April 2, and April 4,[4] with the first fire being in St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre and the other two churches, the Greater Union Baptist Church and the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church, being burnt down the following week.[5] After the church arsons, he was turned in by his father, who was a deputy in the area.[6] Matthews is currently facing three counts of arson of religious buildings[7] and can face up to 15 years in prison for each charge if he is convicted.[8] He is currently jailed without bond.[9]
