Hollow Core is a rock/metal band from Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. They formed in the summer of 2019,[1] and within months were playing shows in their hometown and the neighbouring cities. The aptly named "Who the hell is Hollow Core" tour kicked off in January 2020[2] On October 30th of that same year they released their debut EP Turning Point.[3] The physical copies of that EP included their second project B-Sides The Point which is scheduled to release digitally on December 18, 2020.[4]
History[edit]
Formation, Demo EP, and Debut Tour[edit]
Hollow Core was formed in the summer of 2019. Austin Dean Kennah (vocals) and Collin Sheehan (guitar) previously worked together in a band called "Built by Thieves." After BBT's separation they were looking to start a new project together.[5] Brad Moulaison (drums) was recommended to the two by friend and future producer Mike Julian (singer for Rival Town). After one "audition practice" Brad, Austin and Collin had already started writing two songs, that would eventually made their way onto future releases. One of which was their first demo "Sands of Time." Andrew Sabev (guitar) was the next person they contacted. Collin and Austin knew him from playing shows with his band The Barrel Rejects. Andrew started out playing bass in Hollow Core, even though he was primarily a guitarist. After realizing that Hollow Core needed two guitarists they asked Andrew to switch to guitar, and they decided they would search for a bass player.
The band started finishing the first Hollow Core songs that would make their way onto their demo EP The Demo CD That Nobody Asked For. Shortly after, around November 2019, Dan Scime (who they knew from his previous band Planned Dilemma) joined the band as the bassist and they had completed the lineup.[1]
In December 2019, the band had 4 songs written and finalized. They decided to record the songs themselves and release them on a demo CD, to sell at their upcoming shows. Collin had recorded everyone's parts on his laptop, except for the drums. They had no way to record them, so instead he programmed them as Midi. Mike Julian mixed and mastered the demos. The band went on to play their debut set of shows on the “Who The Hell Is Hollow Core?” Tour. The previously created demo cds were sold on this small run of shows, although by that point they had nearly double the amount of original songs in their repertoire.[5]
Covid-19 and Turning Point[edit]
In March 2020, with still a few shows to go, Hollow Core went into the Rival Crown Productions studio to record their debut EP Turning Point (with Mike Julian working as the bands producer). They had finished recording their parts for the first single Buried At The Crossroads shortly before Ontario went into lockdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The final shows of the “Who The Hell Is Hollow Core?” Tour were cancelled due to the lockdown.[6]
The band took a break from getting together during the lockdown. Mike Julian, with the bands parts recorded, was able to mix and master the single Buried At The Crossroads. The band went on to release this along with a music video where everyone's parts were shot from their own homes.[7] The song was released in May 2020. At this time the band had cancelled even more shows due to the lockdown, and stopped booking altogether.
When the COVID-19 situation started to settle down in July 2020, the band went back into the studio to finish working on the EP. Sometimes only one or two of them at a time for safety. They released their second single Pure Life with an accompanying music video in August 2020. This time, all of the band members were together to film. Mike Julian also featured as a guest vocalist on the song and in the video.[8]
Around this time, Hollow Core had finished recording all of the songs they had performed on tour. They had 9 tracks. 5 of the tracks would appear on Turning Point and the next 4 would appear on the companion piece B-Sides The Point. The decision on two separate releases was made in an attempt to help with marketing. This was done digitally while the physical CDs for the EP contained both the EP and the B-Sides. Turning Point was released on October 30, 2020.[3] B-Sides The Point is set to release on December 18, 2020[4]
